center tray removal
There must be a simple answer to this! I've tried using an offset screwdriver and a tiny, racheting wrench-like driver, but I just can't seem to loosen (or tighten) the phillips head screw located at the base of the hand brake lever. What a place to put a screw! It's a very tight fit, but surely something must work to remove or retighten that screw.
Do I just need to try again with a little more patience, or perhaps I need an even smaller/better tool? Or is there some easier secret?
Thanks for any help!

I've just used a screwdriver without problems.
Another alternative ( similar to Griots, but much less expensive ) is to buy a small rachet at Radio shack ( about $10 ), or you can get a racheting 1/4" box wrench from Sears, Osh, etc and then stick your screwdriver bit into it.

okay...I figured it out! All along I've been sitting in the driver's seat, trying to unscrew the offending screw from a frontal approach. Even with the offsets, that just didn't cut it. But when I jumped into the passenger seat, lo and behold, I realised I could just slip a regular screwdriver in from that side. No problems...it couldn't be easier.
Moral: I guess this is a good example of getting so caught up in one approach that I failed to consider another, simpler angle.

OldGuy - nothing as wondrous as that. The tray was loose, and I was merely trying to tighten it. When I finally removed the tray for cleaning, though, I did find 12 cents in loose change underneath to put towards my next upgrade! In a prior car, I once found several dollars in change beneath the shifter cover. --Jonathan
