How marginal? Unless the rotors are cracked to death, and you've got 1/4 pad thickness..........well, you're going to be driving on regular roads and sort of regular speeds.
Also, caution has not been my strong suit in the past! I have misjudged tire wear and belt strength/wear very poorly on my past trip and it bit me pretty hard. --Michael

Ya, that was a bit of a debacle... But steel rotors and ceramic brake pads don't really compare to rubber goods.
It's not like a brake rotor is going to unexpectedly start wearing at a super fast rate in the same way that an improperly installed belt, or improperly aligned tire.
Take the 9 and have FD do the brakes while you are out there. Whatever car you drive post up pix of the trip.
That is not a bad idea.
Were I to drive the 911, I would just buy front rotors and pads and change them in my friends driveway when I get to Cali. The fronts are far more grooved and suspect looking than the rears.
Darin is a great guy but I can do them myself and not have to pay labor. I am leaning towards this option right now.
I just need to bite the bullet and spend the vacation money on brakes. That's the tough bit.

Sounds like a solid plan. These brakes are so easy to work with. Post some pics of your current pads/rotors. Even though you intend to cover 10,000 miles (awesome), very little of that will be spent braking...
Just do it. I have been looking forward to hearing about your next adventure since your last trip.
I am leaning towards taking the 911 at this point.
On Thursday or Friday I am going to really look it over and get my tools boxed up and spare parts together.
That will be the real test.
