I'm in Marin, so the roads are pretty decent up here. Hardly ever go into the city anymore. As a family we have the modern cars covered, the past year or so I felt a need to get a great drivers car before they were all gone. Wouldn't put too many miles on it...just drive it when I wanted to and keep it maintained. I think I'll give the 993 a go. Is there a year I should be looking at over another...98 or 97?

As was suggested, I'd drive both before deciding.

The 997.2 is very special, however so are many of the 993 models. I believe that it is best to go slow, determine the options that you gotta have, like to have, and do not need/want, and do your due diligence (including PPI) for any model you pursue.

I too am in Marin with a couple 911s...

If you're leaning towards 993s, the '95 will have an easier time with smog checks thanks to OBD1.

OK - so please expand on your thought "great drivers car". What does that mean to you? Do you want a 6 speed? Convertible? What characteristics appeal to you?

As to model year differences, the '95 has some differences compared to the '96-'98 model years which are essentially similar. The '95 will pass california smog easier (ODBI as has been mentioned), but doesn't have the Vario-Ram (google it). I would suggest you do a few things:

- Drive a 997
- Drive a few 993s
- Drive a 2014 Boxster or Cayman (981 S or GTS). That is a great modern sportscar.
- Drive an older 911, such as a 964 or SC.

Then narrow your search.

I was going to buy a Cayman S (2014), but I couldn't justify the cost difference on a depreciating car vs. the 993 for less money (and less depreciation).

If you focus on a 993, then narrow down what you want (coupe, S, turbo, convertible, 2 or 4, targa, etc.), then find a well maintained car. Get a pre-purchase inspection and plan to spend some money to upgrade the car in certain areas (suspension, headlights, etc.).

I pretty much had the same dilemma. I was looking at a 993 or a 2006/7 c4s- I knew I wanted AWD as I life in Minnesota and do drive my car year round. For me - I love the air cooled engines. Had an 85 targa for years and it was bullet proof. The newer cars are awesome, modern powerful and very comfortable too. It simply came down to wanting a little piece of Porsche history, and I enjoy the spartan approach the older 911s have- albeit the 993 is way ahead of my 993.
I also have a truck from bad winter driving so again the 993 was a solid choice for me. If you're not someone who likes to tinker with cars though, they get really really expensive fast.

Great advice guys, thanks for all the feedback. I'll contact some of the suggested people locally and start driving a couple cars. I'll follow up with pictures of what I end up with.
