Default Is my dream slipping away from me because of the increasing prices of 993s?

Hello fellow Porsche enthusiast. I felt the urge to post and hear some of the experience you gals/guys ran into in your journey of owning the great sports car in the world. Even though I have never owned a Porsche it has been a dream of mine since I can remember. The first time I drove in one, I just felt so connected the to the road I have never felt like this in any other car, and I have driven some great cars. The 993 is the perfect balance between mechanical engineering and technology. It’s a driver’s car hand down.

I grew up in Bochum Germany until the age of 16 and then immigrated to the United States with my family to chase the American dream. My family owns a Germany restaurant here in Louisville Kentucky and are very successful but the restaurant business is tough and don’t get rich doing it. You can imagine why German cars are my thing. I always dreamed that by age 30 I would own my first Porsche. Unfortunately this dream has not come true, yet .

When the 993 first came out I already lived in the US, I was so taken by the beauty and the fact that it was the fastest production car (993TT) in the world. It reminded me so much of the 959 which of course I had posters in my room from an early age. Just sexy and perfect curves. I said to myself, one day I will own one. Now that I am in my late 30s and I have my own family, I thought I could achieve this dream. Was I wrong? When I look at the going prices of the 993 I am blown away by the current market values. This only makes me want one even more, because I see the values going up and my dream slipping away. It is amazing how strong the values of these cars are, but it scares me because I might not be able to afford one.

For the past year I have been looking almost daily, but have yet found one that I can afford or meets my expectations. I don’t mind a project car as I love working on them. I am not a mechanic, but am not scared to tackled repairs. With my current car which is 2001 BMW E38 (740IL) I have done many repairs in the past 8 years of ownership which I thought I could never do myself. With the wealth of knowledge online and great DIY documentation available, it seems may things are doable. I am hoping for the same knowledge for the 993. This site seems to be a good place for that.

I have been searching on-line wherever one is available, but prices are just too high for me. Would buying one at auction be my best bet? I am sure there is some risk. It would be interesting to hear from you guys what your thought are on the increasing prices, cost of ownership and what to look out for when buying my first 993. I have had my eyes on the 96-98 C2S as I am a huge fan of the wide body and turbo look, with or without the wing. Any insight you could share would be much appreciated.

Cheers
Robert

I fully understand your feeling. I also dreamed about this car for a long time.

When I was 17, I got a good deal on a 944 1984. It wasn't a 911 but at least I had a step into the Porsche world. BTW, 944 are still great cars, fun to drive and accessible with a low budget (some sell for $4k). It could be a partial band aid while you find a 993...

I was always looking at the classified for Porsche... convinced I coulded afford it. One day I found one that was not in good shape but still in working condition. I bought it and I'm slowly (but way faster than I thought) restoring it. I replaced shocks, wires and plugs, seats, all the carpet, paint, wing, wheels, etc.

I didn't realise how expensive maintenance and upgrades are... financially it would have been cheaper to buy one in good shape. But I have to admit : I love to take her as a project and I improve it with my own taste.

It's a dream that came true for me. I'm sure it's possible for you too! Good luck with your search!

Keep on searching and never give up. I refreshed car websites hourly for weeks until I found one near me that I could afford. It's all about luck: preparation meeting opportunity. You can only control one.

I was hoping to stay in the low 40s, but have not seen one S-model in that price range. I am not affraid of a higher mileage cars, as long as it has been well maintained and good service records. I have also considered other models. I do love the 956s as well as older 911. I always thought a 1976 911 would be cool considering that was the year I was born. But the 993 is the my true love/dream. I am affraid is I get another model, I put to much money into it and the 993 again becomes out of reach. Maybe I shoudl start playing the lottery

You're missing a CRAZY deal in the member's classifieds right now.. 1997 C4S with 75K miles for $37K....MADNESS!!!! Owner doesn't know what he's got, doesn't know the current air-cooled market, or doesn't care (fire sale)... It's $15K too cheap.

just get a narrowbody.

basically the same experience. I wouldn't let 1.5 inches separate me from a dream. (i'm sure the perverts will come up with something for that comment)

I don't think you'll find a 956 in your price range and I don't think it'd be the greatest daily driver.

And FWIW you don't need an S if all you want is the 993 experience. The S adds 3 inches, maybe better brakes, and a 15k premium that will be there when you buy it and when you sell it. Its a net 0 option, honestly, but it if prohibits you from getting a the car you've dreamed of, leave it alone.

If you really want a 993 and want to drive it, then don't worry so much about the "S" model. They all drive great and the extra 20mm of tire in the rear doesn't really do much for you anyways. Unless you have a seriously upgraded motor you will probably find yourself with an understeering car if you run much more than 265's in the rear (assuming 225's up front).
Widebody's sure are sexy though!

Agree, I can't believe the car is still available.

Will agree with others, forget about the S.

If you were even seriously thinking about a 1976 911, I don't think it should be a problem to strongly consider a 993 C2. In this crazy market and based on your childhood dream story, I wouldn't sit back any longer. Think of it this way, you will be in your late 40's in the blink of an eye!

And if speculation about prices continue to rise are true, wouldn't you rather be going with the wave vs. watching it. Get yourself into C2 ownership, drive, mod, DIY, enjoy it etc for "x" amount of years. And if financially possible many years down the road, re-consider if an S is really worth it for you. Chances are it might not be the case...

It is all but gone. There is a line of people waiting for it. One of those in line will be the buyer.

You guys are probably right about the S model. But this is what keeps me dreaming. I stole these images on the internet many years ago, each time I see them, I fall in love again. Just beautiful, no other sports car in the world looks as great to me as this. Something about these lines. I believe it was a britisch designer that worked on the shape. Drool..

Anyway, I do want a drivers car and a non S is definetly more in my price range. I will keep looking and keep reading everyones post. Love this type of community.. Always great to see others with the same passion.
