Thanks sy308...

I really wanted the James Bond special in the dash, but the key fob solution sounds like a winner, as long as the key fob isn't too big. I hate carrying TOO much stuff in my pockets as they're already filled with lots of crap as it is. I'll head there today to check it out.

On the other hand - for the GDO in the console solution - do I need to go to Sears to get a smaller GDO in the first place in order that it fit under the console? I have the regular GDO that was available for the last 10 years, but it's not THAT small. Maybe they've gotten MUCH smaller in the past couple of years and that's the only kind that will fit under the console???

Steve

Your GDO should fit easily in the console. There's a pretty big space, almost enough for a PB&J sandwich to give you an idea

Hi Steve - If you are still searching, I have the equipment for the job. Don't recall the instructions since I looked at it a while back. If you print and bring the instructions over together with the hardware on Saturday, I'll solder whatever needs soldering. It is a nice opportunity for me to see how its done.

I should be home all weekend, if you want to be sure call me before leaving your place. Email me if you still want this done.

Saturdays and Sundays till 5 are the only day we have our daughter (my stepdaughter) and I am needed for "daddy-duty". Any chance you are available on a Sunday after 5pm one weekend???

I REALLY appreciate the offer.

When I bought my house about 3 years ago, it came with 2 SEars GDO remote controllers that were about the size of a pack of cigarettes each. Replaced these with newer Sears controllers about 1.5 X 2.5 X 0.75 in. One of these I hard-wired into the 993.

Also, find my post of about a week ago. I found placing the controller inside the front console forward of the switch panel was a horrible location; metal console acted as a shield and severely reduced the range to the point where with the car outside the garage I couldn't open the door. Locating the GDO controller at the rear of the console around the cassette/CD tray where everything's plastic immensely helped performance.

Steve, I feel your pain. I too would like to do this but all of this electronic talk is lost on me. I would still like to know how to test if my two speed cooling fans are working properly (I suspect they aren't) but don't have a clue about what the instructions are talking about.

Thanks Ray -

Yes, I remember your post from last month about moving the GDO location to the cassette storage area. I'll run it by the gent who is helping me this weekend to put it in. I HOPE I don't need to go to Sears to buy yet another GDO so it will be that much smaller. A gent posted above that the older one I have should be small enough to fit under the front panel, assuming the signal is decent enough there to open my garage door.

Ah, the little things in life. This post would probably seem pretty infantile and petty to most non P-car people (or even some of you guys lurking out there)!

Steve,
I looked at the instructions and it seems a pretty straightforward task. Why don't you give me a call around 4PM on Sunday and I'll see what I am up to? (I am very likely to be at home getting ready for a tile job:-)

Steve,
You want James Bond? Try this http://www.smarthome.com/7458F.html
Our Dodge mini van has a push button in the overhead console.

I'm going to try it when we move into our new house.

Thanks Pete. I looked up the ad on the true "James Bond" GDO flash system and it says this: 'Simple half-hour set-up; easy enough for even the most basic do-it-yourselfers'

Uh - I'm not sure I even fit in the "basic DIY" category, but I didn't feel like spending $100 either! I'm going to try the GDO set up in the control panel first and see how that works.

Louis: Could you private message me your phone # so I can contact you as I don't have it anymore! That way I can call before coming this weekend on Sunday as well as get directions. Or just email me privately at stever500@comcast.net
I look forward to seeing your new 97 TT up close again and wrapping up this GDO chapter.

Gratefully yours,
Steve

Steve,
There's nothing quite as satisfying as reviving an old Rennlist thread! The instruction link you gave is no longer working - do you happen to have a copy saved?

Andreas
