I recently installed the FD Goldenrod in my 96 C2 6 speed car, very noticeable improvement. My Question;
Maybe I am now just noticing it or the GR's improved action exacerbated it but the side to side / left to right action on the shifter seems pretty sloppy, almost like whatever spring that controls the centering action is too weak now. Would the FD SSK cure this? Another part that needs to be addressed? Thanks guys.......Mark.
P.S. LOL...I honestly thought the GR was the last mod I'd be doing.
If you haven't done so, replace the 4 plastic bushings (#6 on PET). Or at least inspect and see if they're still intact. They're about 2.99 each IIRC and would be a cheap 1st step in possible reasons you notice some play.
When I did my FD golden rod/SSK mod I replaced all the bushings, etc... my shifter went from something that reminded me of an old 3 speed CJ-7 I had years ago to a rifle bolt on a Winchester I still own today. No side to side, up and down, back and forth at all.
I noticed the side to side flex on the standard setting also. My thumb will get pinched between the shifter and the seat when shifting in reverse. That bothers me more than the longish travel of the shift. I wonder if the golden rod does make it worse since there is less resistance then the old rubber bushing. Anyway I went with the rothsport shifter from FD along with the golden rod because I really, really wanted to minimize the side to side flex.
the side to side movement in the shifter is controlled by a pair of springs inside the trans. on the reversing lever shaft.These springs can be modified.
It's a little trickey ,can end up with too much effort to clear 5-6 gate.
The reversing lever controls the direction the linkage moves and which shift rod is selected but you have to go inside the trans. to get to it.
