I am thinking a new performance chip on my 97' C2S would make a nice upgrade.
Looking thru the records I don't see documentation that it was ever done on mine.
Is there a quick and easy way to tell if your 993 has the original chip and/or has ever been upgraded?

Don't waste your money. If you want a faster 993 sell it and get the turbo.
I disagree. I have the Rennsport ECU from Steve Weiner and couldn't be happier. The difference even with 91 Octane is very noticeable. I mostly run 100 octane (weekend use car for me) and it can detect that and load a 100 octane map accordingly. With that...it's a night and day scenario literally OMG expression.

Hi,
One easy way to see if the ECU has ever been removed is to remove the seat and inspect the bolts holding the plastic cover over the ECU. If you see normal hex bolts, its been removed for one reason or another. If you see the factory shear bolts (one-way fasteners), its never been touched.
I'd be interested in this info also as a lot of the posts on '96 chips are older. I just checked out ebay, partsheaven, and some others and didnt see any used '97 ECUs for sale.
Whats an average, current price for a used '97 ECU nowadays?

I am just too cheap to buy race gas......91 Octane is approaching $5.00 a gallon in Cali, I hate to thin k of what 100 octane goes for. I'll just trudge along on 91 octane, envious of those that have a chip

Used '97 ECU's can be difficult to find now since most salvage engines get sold with their matching harness & ECU. I would call around on that. We usually buy new ones for that reason.

Unfortunately there is no method for the Bosch Motronic in any 993 to switch ignition timing maps based on octane, that is not the way it works. The ignition timing can never advance past the single map that is programmed into the chip. If you have a chip programmed for 100 octane then you should not be running 91 octane gas... the ECU will only reduce timing so much in response to the knock sensors. It is possible to adjust that value but I've never seen one do that before!

Steve did an ECU re-flash for me. I re-installed the ECU last night. I was only able to get the car out for 10 minutes or so due to the rain, so my impressions so far are limited.
I can definitely say that the car idles smoother and the throttle response is quicker. There is a torque bump through the rev range and the car gets to redline quicker through the gears. It's not a massive bump, but it's most definitely noticeable. I think I've got 91 octane in the car now. I'll be interested to see if 93 or a 50/50 mix of 93/100 (per Steve's recommendation) adds even more.
I've got the FD 200 Cell Sport Cats and I think pairing it with the ECU re-flash is a great combo, at least for me. Certainly it's not an inexpensive option (especially when paired with the Cats) to pick up a bit more power, but the icing on the cake was the Immobilizer defeat Steve did as part of the re-flash. That alone is worth the dough!
