Roller, Fan Belt Sensor
I have the original sensor (95) with the steel roller. My question has to do with the bearing/roller, should the bearing/roller have a rubber outer lining? My roller doesn't have any rubber over it, should it?

The way you describe it, sounds like your sensor wheel is gone and its running on the metal center shaft/bearing. Your sensor should look a little like the on on the right here....except that one is ab old one, where the metal bearing seized, stopped spinning and the belt shaved off one side of the roller.

not a cheap part, but many here have done away with it also...so there just might be a few floating around. that being said, EXTREMELY easy DIY...a single 5mm hex bolt (IIRC) hold that sensor wheel in place. Unplug the electrical connection, loosen/remove the bolt-WITHOUT DROPPING IT IN TH BOTTOM OF THE PULLEY CREVIS, then simply re-install. Every couple of years, simply remove again, and place a few drops of lubricant on both sides of the pulley housing-at the metal of the so called bearing part.

I recently did the RS fan hub. While doing so I thought I had ruined the sensor while wrestling with a belt. The roller would not have tension and it appeared as though I ruined the spring. Without taking it off, I was able to use electronic contact cleaner/lube and spray it and get it to function properly. You shouldn't have to take it off to do this. I know the NA engines sit an inch or two more forward and it may not be a big deal to get it out. In the turbo it's a fricken pain to try and get the 5mm hex in there. Dropping things into the abyss is not something I like dealing with.

just buy a new one and replace it. they are cheap. like $70. it will take you 20 minutes. not worth the risk. dont go installing a used one 'floating around' the forum as suggested above

It will soon cause you problems when the metal center wears out the belt, cuts it, it goes through the fan, breaking the fan... Ok, so that's worst case, but....not worth the risk.
An extendable magnetic pickup tool is your friend when working in that area! You WILL drop something into the abyss (under the crank pulley)... Do some searching here on RL, and you'll find plenty of DIY info on this one.

Just replaced mine, and the belt that it was shaving down because it was stuck forward. Belt and part were $240 replaced and installed. Cheap?? I guess for these cars but better than a tow truck ride when the sensor breaks the belt!!
+1 for Sunset for parts, they are tough to get ahold of, but worth the wait!! Great prices!
