My 993 used to have a strong "Eau de Mobil1" smell until I stopped filling oil to max level. Now there is a slight pleasant smell of burnt oil. The materials do have a characteristic german smell and reminds me of many past Mercedes. I also love the "granite-like" teutonic door sound.

When I drive her, I truly marvel at the simplicity of the car, yet I have everything I need.

Love the smell of my 993. Big part of the allure for me.

Interestingly, I recently bought a slightly used (2010 but only 6000 miles) AM V8 Vantage and it smells like a new car with very rich leather smell. Love that too but it is a completely different smell. In contrast my 2011 M3 has zero smell of any kind.

You can also add me to the list of people that like the smell. My previous 944's also had a pleasing scent in them. The solid doors are also great, and so is the overall quality of the materials used in the interior.

The strong door "click", the smell, and the 5 instrument cluster with the Tach in the middle.

I love the click of the doors, the sound of the aircooled flat-six, the beefy stance with the 315's out back... oh, and those hips...

I gotta jump in here and say the smell is also one of my favorite parts, I get a LOT of comments about it. Oh, and the closing door sound...and the simple puposeful gauges...and the view out the windshield looking over the fender curves (I have wipers parked on the right)...and the upright windshield...and...well you get the idea.

Agree with all of the above points but one thing that stands out for me over all the years of p-car ownership is the great other p-car owners I have met and now call friends .

Cheers Guy

The smell of my garage after pulling in either air-cooled P car after a long drive....lasts for hours, the smell of air cooled dry sump lubricated motors...

The view over the rear qtr from the driver side mirror. The sound of the doors. How truly wide the rear is. The gently wobble as the engine idles. The new old car smell. And mostly, the sound of the #3 boiler turning over on the Bismarck.

The people are ok too. =)

I was just thinking about this the other day. I rebuilt a 71 911 with my father starting when I was 14. It was a fantastic experience. It shaped my love of cars, and cemented my love of Porsche from an early age. 20 years later I bought my first 911. An exact copy of the arena red 993 I sat in as a senior in high school and dreamed of ever since is now at home in my garage. I don't even have to drive it to be happy. Just the shape draws me to the garage.

It's the smell though once you get inside and close the door. Staring down that hood with the pronounced headlight bulges. That smell feels like home. Reminiscent of a childhood dream of building something special with my dad. Hopefully one of my daughters will love this car as much as I do.

It is so unique. Very different from other 911s.
Every time I come inside my car, drive it, or am about to get out, I smell the scent of a 993!
Awesome.
What is it for you that it makes it special?
R.
I don't own a 993 - my Porsche is a Gen 2 Cayman. But I regularly visit this forum b/c I feel my Cayman hearkens back to, and has more in common with the 993, than it does with the 981 or 991. I can relate to this thread because my Cayman has a unique aroma, part keather, part cologne, part Porsche, that is so unique and appealing.

First thing I noticed about my 993 when I brought it home last week was how similar the smell was to my '87 Carrera. The oil, leather and fuel smell seems to intermingle to produce a very distinct and unforgettable aroma.
