What is this?
Been following this Forum for a while. Happy to say I'll be going to California next week to probably buy a speed yellow 1996 993 Coupe ! Passed the PPI very well and appears to be in great condition. I do have one question however – what is this box in the engine compartment? The PPI was done by Precision Motion in California and they don't really have a clue. Neither does my local shop here in Austin, Texas. Evidently there is also a rotary switch in the cockpit on the – dashboard connected to it. looking forward to future conversations.

I have one of those on mine. It's a transcoaxial fillament. They were only put on SY cars. It amplifies/reduces the ammount of yellow the car gives off. Look for a gain control on the side of the unit. I have mine set to "K."

Unit is also obviously broken, or it was turned up to 11, and the **** broken off.
To the OP, car looks spectacular, best of luck...and we need more poics.

The car has 84,000 miles at $$37,000, seems very straight and original. Good Records.
That black box really has me wondering. I'm almost afraid to turn the rotary dial in the cockpit. Could it be a flux capacitor? I'm really hoping it has a mystery purpose that we can deduce on our trip through California. Think I saw in the record somewhere that the car had an old-school phone installed... that could be part of it.
Hopefully will be picking up the car Tuesday and will drive up the coast for a week or so .... then ship the car back to Austin. Safe to say I am excited. PerfectionMotion Porsche has been great to work with during the PPI and get ready process. Seller has been great as well. Will Post photos of the pick-up and Drive.

just curious, have you asked the current owner what it is or is this a dealer car?? need a bigger picture (close up) to fully understand how it's interacting - did the PPI shop even have a guess based on what it was connected to?

Here is the Highest res I have in Dropbox.

I've asked everyone involved and no one seems to know. PPI shop says it may be Rear facing radar, alarm or some phone stuff.
The wires seem to go underneath the header.

Wow....that owner of that car must have it set for max yellow. If you turn it way down, would it look similar to mine?
