Default Alternator

Can anyone tell me how to test my alternator operation? I've been told the output is low, but my electrical knowhow is limited. No lights are on when the car is driven. Some stay on until I get the revs up. it's always done that. I was told the output should be about 13.5 volts? How and where so I measure?

Thanks

Might want to read through this recent thread. Touches on your questions:

Also to check voltage, just connect a volt meter to the two terminals on your battery when its on. 13.5V sounds around right with the car on; I think its stated in the above thread.

13.5 is a bit low, i'd like to see closer to 14.

"13.5 is a bit low, i'd like to see closer to 14."

The 964/993 Bosch alternator voltage results in less than 14 volts when
measured at the battery, i.e. typically 13.5 - 13.8.

Of course it is temperature dependent, but he should be seeing at least 14V unless he has everything turned on with the engine idling.

I'm measuring 14.2V at idle with daytime running lights on.

And if you check the spec on the voltage regulator, it is 14.5V which equates to a bit less at the battery.
