Difference between 993 Big Reds vs. 928 GTS Big Reds?
Seems that the 928 GTS Big Reds sell for less than the 993 Big Reds. What's the catch?
Compare Pelicanparts Big Reds at $1445:
http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/...993tec_pg3.htm
And 928GT's Big Reds sets at $950 (the website confusingly refers to Big Reds as a 928 option, then later as a 911 option):
http://www.928gt.com/Brakes.htm
Or are we talking about market segmentation here? I.e. 993 owners have fatter wallets than 928 owners, so charge 'em more.
Edit:
Clarification on two points above:
1. The price for Big Reds at 928GT's website is $940, not $950
2. It is the 993 Big Red since they have a 993 part number
Interestingly, according to 928GT, the 928 GTS brake calipers are almost similar to the 993 Big Reds with three exceptions:
1. They're cheaper (by about $90 according to the website)
2. They're black
3. The line connection point is slightly different (don't have details on this, they'er gonna get back to me)
Since I'm due to changing my front rotors soon, I'm debating if I should just get the larger front brakes given the attractive price. I might just get the 928 GTS black calipers so that I don't have to paint the rear rotors red. Yeah, I lose I "wow" factor but I'm doing it for performance reasons, not looks.

So, if:
Theory A: Porsche reserves the best for the RS, then 928GTS brakes are better?
or
Theory B: Porsche reserves the best of the Turbo, then Big Reds are better?
Probably splitting hairs here but still, curious to know.

My father-in-law has a 928GTS. We actually had this specific conversation not too long ago. The brake calipers are identicle. The main difference is the mounting hardware. The Calipers on the GTS are black but are the exact same as big reds. The fron GTS calipers are mounted on the back (towards rear) of the front assembly, and the TT calipers are mounted on the front of the assembly. To use the other caliper, simply flip the mounting brackets (left to right). Here are some pictures that will help out.

Compare that to your car.

928GTS brakes on a car weighing 3/4 as much as a 928GTS would perform very nicely, I expect!

The 993 and S4 calipers are identical. the difference is in the position of mounting, as Moose indicated trailing mounts on the 928, leading mounts on the 993. To switch from one to the other the external transfer tube and bleeds need to be swapped. Either can be painted any color you want, Porsche generally used black for these calipers
The Big Red has the same pistons and overall length, but is ~10mm taller so it needs a 322mm rotor instead of the 304mm rotor generally used with the 993/S4. The Big Red also came in black and yellow from the factory
Lots of brake data here
To understand the difference in pricing you need to know item by item what is included in each kit, and finally the marketing strategy of the vendor
As indicated inthe above link rear calipers were axial mount versions of the 993/S4 or the smaller 964 caliper w/ 30/36, 30/34, or 30/28 pistons depending on the application

the 928GTS front caliper uses the same pads as the 993RS/tt front and 964 3.6t, this is sometimes called "Big Red" though the 928GTS is black. It uses a 322mm rotor

Porsche pricing is interesting to say the least. For example, the 21 mm wheel spacer on rear of 944 and front of Turbo 930 is same part with an Audi part number cast into it. For 944 Porsche use the Audi part number and for a 930 a 930 part number but sell the 930 part for way more money. Marketing.
