Default Cam cover gasket replacement Anyone tried this yet??

Got a small leak from my driver side cam cover. Going to change both sides this weekend. Anyone try this yet?? Looks like the cat may have to come off to get to all the bolts. Any tips or gotcha's??

Thanks in advance

Hi Eric,

Never on a 993.... but I did both sides on my old RS America. I already had the exhaust out for a valve adjustment (love those hydraulic ones now ), but removal of the sheet metal shroud around the engine (horizontal plane) was a bit of a PITA. The AC bracket required contortion but not removal, although if your passenger side is OK, you won't be bothered. Torquing all of the nuts was not possible due to clearance, so I went by feel on a few. All in all, it was not technically challenging, but required considerable patience and numerous breaks. Please post a follow-up when you finish... both sides of my "new" car have a faint seep. I have not picked up the gaskets yet, but the stealer had them and a hand-full of "washer seals" available. Any idea if these are required... the RSA just had Al washers, which I lightly goobed with some RTV silicone. Hope this helps... and good luck!

Mark.

Eric,
Several people have done this on 993's. All the info is in the archives. Searches aren't quite what they used to be right now. I'd suggest you wait until the search function is working.

From what I recall, the DIY is not that difficult.

Thanks Mark/Tom. I tried the search and got nothing...
I will take pics and do a DYI write up for Robins site along with the dual oil cooler that Glen is sending me.

Done it numerous times on 3.2L 911s. Pretty simple to just change the gaskets. Usually changed the gasket when I had the engine out for one thing or another...

Never had to do it on my 3.6L Turbo or the 993TT.
