So I tried doing the door strap modification on my car after the strap had begun creaking and making the mount flex a lot. Following Chris' procedure, I cleaned and re-lubed the internals and trimmed the rubber spacers. After assembling and re-installing, there was no detent action at all. Cleaning up my work area, I found one of the spacers that must've fallen out while I was reassembling the mechanism.
I do not feel comfortable disassembling the mechanism again without a backup in case the tabs break after pulling apart again.
Question is, if I buy a new one, is it still recommended to trim the rubber spacers? Also, is there any problem with the strap not having the detent action besides not having an intermediate door position?
Vince- those little tabs are tough. I've re opened mine backup with no issue. I hope you didnt trim too much. No detent will mean the door wont stay opened if you're on an incline, nothing serious. If you end up getting a new one, only time before the rubber hardens. I would trim new ones too.
Well I took a different approach. Even though I have no issues with the door straps yet, I took a Dremel tool and ground a little off the top and bottom of the first detent on the strap. Of course, now, the door doesn't hold well at the first detent on an incline but, so what, I open out to the second detent and it's fine. Didn't have to take anything apart.
