Removing shift linkage ball cups - how?

Got replacement cup inserts because I read several posts about the cup wearing / degrading and falling off the ball, or adding serious slop. Sounded like good preventative maintenance item for a 100k+ car...
Mine definitely aren't falling off, and don't have any discernable forward/backward play, though I can rotate the rod about 30 or 40 degrees (as you would expect from a ball joint). But dunno if this means they're ok, and since I have the parts and am in there figured I might as well do 'em.
They are not responding to pretty firm tugging - how the heck do I get these off? Do I need to use a teeny gear puller?
Or should I just leave 'em alone since they aren't showing any sign of being near to falling off?
I'm referring to cup inserts (nylon?) at the end of 15 & 16 below (but not shown as a separate part)
And yes, I know about goldenrod but I am over budget (and under spousal scrutiny) after top end and LWF/RS clutch. Maybe next year.
TIA/Brian

I replayed the plastic up on my 993 recently - after the rod basically fell off when i was driving, catching me on the highway in 2nd gear, fortunately close to home. It is quite an easy fix, preferably done on a lift rather than lying on ones back on the garage floor, as I did.
Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Mine sure didn't come off easy, I think they were pretty much in new condition. 19mm wrench eventually did the trick, just fits over the ball.
New cups didn't want to press in all the way so i pried the top lip into place with a screwdriver. Pressed the cups onto the ***** with my floor jack, hard to get leverage otherwise with limited room (car is on jack stands).
Thx for the pointers Quad!
Cheers/bc

Thanks Reuben, i did get it finished with quad's wrench tip and some creative verbal persuasion.
BTW while searching I came across another post that suggested using a wire cage to hold the cup in place, even if the plastic is gone. Seemed like a good idea so I'll be doing that before I button up the trans tray. Cheap insurance.
