It is an enormous amount of work to to a nice paint job. Pulling glass, disassembling doors, lids, mirrors, door handles, bumper caps, lights, rubber seals, etc. If I were paying someone to do this work instead of doing it myself...wow.

Glasurit paint alone is almost $2K for materials, new rubber alone is more than $1K. Anyway, after all that, my car was delivered today from painter and it all seems worth it even if I have a lot to do yet.

Agreed, it starts to diverge when the original quality is at C or less. Everyone will have a tolerance point where the respray becomes worth it, albeit could be a D or F quality.

My car is at best a B quality paint right now, and I don't see the need to respray.

I realize at some point I will have to respray, but resale value doesn't matter to me because I am never selling my 993, I will keep it, or pass it to one of the kids.

Touché. Never selling mine and plan to drive it, leave it to my kid....

I was just in a fender bender of my own doing recently and both bumpers are bing replaced/repainted. Might do the hood as it is rashed, but more likely Dr. Colorchip and go.

Not because I am cheap, but because it still looks good/turns heads. I plan to drive it and enjoy it, it will just get chipped again anyway. Plus I like things that are original and scarred. If I get to the point where I need to drop the engine to re-build, that would be the time to re-paint, but maybe not even then. I actually like patina and a good story, just like I like old faces and hate plastic surgery, but maybe I am weird; its life, live it... I will let the museums collect the cars, I prefer to drive them.

This post says it all- either way is OK and if the car is in good sharpe it doesn't matter.

All these thoughtful opinions on the merits and attributes of a respray .... my head hurts .... when the time comes, think I'll paint mine with a 4" brush to avoid the mental anguish ...

Yes and no. Sloan has been trying to sell an original paint 356 A with 16K miles forever...last time I heard price was in the mid 200's. Your going to see comps for fully restored number 1 cars going for more.

I think we are really another 5 years plus on the 933 where a respray is not automatically considered an issue for a lot of buyers. The flip side is there are a fair amount of 993's that are ten foot cars at this point. Getting a high quality respray (think single stage if solid color, Glasurit paint, etc.) is getting very difficult and expensive. I would rather buy a car with very high quality paint (original or respray) and deal with mechanical issues than the other way.

Totally agree - "rather buy a car with a high quality respray vs mechanical issues".

Bought my car last yr. with 83k miles sight unseen but had a renfax done. I was warned about of chips to the front end. I liked the idea of all original paint and was happy with the car when it was delivered...now I wish it had a respray. I'm over the originality and now want it to look awesome for ME. Still struggling with the money it will cost to respray because I'm still happy with it. I'm torn.
