Bought mine as an interim car between my last car (BMW M Coupe) and what was supposed to be my next car (BMW M3 CSL that I had ordered 2 years before it finally came out).

Well, the 993 grew on me and grew on me until I had already decided not to keep the CSL - and when the pricing on the CSL was annouced; my mind was made up!! So I passed on the CSL without even seeing it and am still very happy indeed with my 993.

UPDATE: And there are still a fair few unsold CSLs around - not that many 993s hang around unsold - what does that tell ya??

I suppose this is a fitting subject for my first post on the infamous and very impressive Rennlist!

My story is similar to many. I was leaving the company car scheme, I commute by train/Tube in London so I don't cover a lot of miles. I have no garage and no kids. Therefore I wanted a well-made, reliable, fun, fast, older sports car to care for and enjoy, and I'd been saving for many months.

I'd been dreaming of a 911 since my childhood (when James Hunt was my hero, hence the name I use - the most exciting F1 driver, on and off the track)! It is the only car to fit the criteria I'd set. My research covered 3.2 Carreras, but they seemed too raw and too much hard work with maintenance, so I looked at 964s. I couldn't find one I was confident in. I sneakily started noticing 993s - surely out of my price range but the best-looking and exciting model. My Dad was getting just as excited, so he gave me an £11K loan. I remortgaged my flat and blew everything on my 993 last month!

I don't need to tell you lot how much fun it has been - and I can't wait for summer!

Wow, congratulations Tim!

Remember, no PSM on that 'old' car. If you're not already familiar w. the local PCA region, check out www.lsrpca.com and the DE section.

Enjoy.

My first impressions of Porsches were from the Dutch highway police who used to drive early 911 coupes and later Convertibles and Targas (open top year round). Got much more interested when reading Auto, Motor und Sport in the mid-70s but I had no $$$ and figured I'd never afford one.

Then started to make money in the 80s but lived in some wild places where a Porsche was pretty much useless. When I finally stopped moving around countries and got my master's degree (and a 'decent' job), I decided it was time to get one at age 35.

In the end I think it was the incredibly striking picture of the RUF yellowbird on the front page of the AMS that I could never get out of my mind when dreaming about fast wheels that caused this affliction....:-)

Buying my first 911 was a "before 30" target. I got my 993 2 years before that. Sold it and am now looking for next one. I think I know already what it will be.

I bought mine in 1966 from a destitute friend. Paid 200 for a beaten up 1962 Karmen Coupe. We took a flat bed truck up to Crested Butte, Co to get the car. It was BR Green with a S engine, tan interior. My Dad and I rebuilt the engine and then had the car painted at the local body repair school. I didn't reralize how rusty it was underneath until I went through a puddle and the whole window fogged over. After a girl I dumped egged the car, I sold it and bought a 1960 150S Jaguar. Next Porsche was a S90 Raodster. Wish I still had both. Sold the jag for $1400 and the Roadster for $1500.

I paid cash in 1991 for an '85 911 Cab, 3.2 liter. I was 29 and my business was doing well.

7 Porsches later, 3 of which I still have: '01 Boxster S, '70 911S unfinished project, and '98 993 C2S Aero.

Fastest was my 2.8 liter stroked 951...unbelievable acceleration....50-120mph in a heartbeat. Best handling: Boxster S. Sexiest: 993. Most fun: 1973 911E converted to RSR race car.

Boughtmy first two years ago, a silver '88 Cab as a Christmas present for myself (with my wife's approval). Just a play car since I have a company car for a daily driver. Loved it and after two seasons of auto-xs decided it was time for Drivers Ed so I got the '96!

Only regret was waiting so long!

In the spring of 1999, I traded my -90 Chevy Astro, plus my brother's Honda dirt bike bike (which I paid him later) to my first Porsche (1973 911)!

My son (at the time 4 years old) was extremely happy but my wife wasn't too please with my decision to trade our family car for 911, and that was before she realized I needed another car for winter...

In the end, she was happy (after she got her own car) and that little 911 was such a dream come true and reason why I'm writing to you guys now here at Rennlist.

I still miss that car.

My pop wrote an early article (for TIME) on the 356 -- and he was hooked! He had three of them over the years, then a white 68 911T. I always vowed: "Someday..." - which turned out to be 1996 when I went to look at an 88 Carrera and also drove an 89 C4. Bought the C4 and loved it. Sold that and got my 96 18 months ago.

My Dad loved both of them and he's surely at the wheel of a TT up now with The Man. It's in the blood (at least how I 'splain to my wife).

Bought my first Porsche on 12-5-2003. It will be my last Porsche. Here's why.

I never thought I would like Porsche, as I grew up associating it with the VW Beetle. I bought an M5 in 2001 and started seriousely getting into cars. I found out that most BMW guys look at Porsche as the next big step-up in the fine-auto food chain. I still was not impressed and actually assured my wife that I would not trade-up to a Porsche.

Everything changed in the Fall of 2002 when Pin (yes the evil Swuipin ) and I exchanged rides over our local twisties. He had a silver 993 C4S with PSS9s. It TOTALLY blew me away as the car cornered like nothing I've ever known. And I thought the M5 is a good handling car.

Since then, I just laid awake at night thinking about a sports car and how it would drive over my favorite roads. I could not convince my wife then to allow the luxury of a 993, so in December 2002, I bough a super-charged Miata, with Bilstein coil-overs, to scratch my itch. It was a fun little car, and I was happy with it until March 2003. Pin (the evil Swuipin again ) and I again switched rides, and now he has DJ's seal grey track-prepped 993 with all the goodies (the PSS9s are a given), and it TOTALLY blew my Miata away. So I lobbied extra hard on my wife for a Porsche, nut I diidn't tell her which one.

In the mean time, I read up on ANYTHING I can find on Poresches, test drove a bunch more and decided on the 993. I also knew that my wife will be totally annoyed if I bagged to mod or trade-up every two/three years, so I gotta start at the top of the 993 food chain. I looked at 993tt, then the 993tts, and eventually, a RUF.

December 5, 2003, I picked up my 95 RUF BTR-2 and brought it home. It will be my last Porsche as I cannot think of another Porsche I'd rather own/drive. 996 is not a consideration, Carrera-GT is way too flashy for me, and too pricey for my wife. GT3 is too low on torque, GT2 is similar perfromance, but 2x the price, so why bother?

So now you know the rest of my story.

Thanks again Pin.

Ebay is a dangerous thing.

About two years ago, I discovered the joys of perusing Ebay Motors for 911's. In Novermber of 02, I caught this 94 964 Cab with 50k, at a low reserve of 29k. I came up with a scheme to go pick it up in Dallas, drive it back, cruise it for 6 months, and sell it for what I paid for it in SoCal.

I watched the auction days tick down, and that afternoon on my lunch break, I said "Screw It" and bought it. I flew out to Dallas with my Dad, and he and I drove it back 1600 miles in 2 days - just having the time with my Dad was worth it.

I did everything wrong - the car was supposed to have all the books and records, but they "couldn't find them" when I showed up. I didn't have it pass Texas smog, so of course it failed in CA, and I had to put a $2200 catalytic converter in....

You may know how this story ends - I never sold it, and in fact am planning a devious scheme to divest myself of my 964, and the '01 540i 6-speed and upgrade to a 993 TT....

Aspired for decades. As a teenager, neighbor's Dad had a 356, new. Grad school room mate had a 356, well used but ran perfect. Raced him through the mud tracks in the valley orchards in my then new '67 Beetle. I got stuck up to my tail pipes, he didn't. I waited till I was 43, past family and kids education obligations, and bought a 2 year old '87, just to see if I liked them. Over 200K miles later on 2 Porsches, I decided life is too short for anything else.
