I had been in the market for a 911(used) as I was't thrilled about the *new* watercooled version coming out.My dealer who had just sold me my second BMW 3 series called me on a monday. He said he had his hands on one of the very last 993's to be built.I knew he was going down his list of contacts..so I couldn't *get back to him*..And i took it.

Best snap decision I ever made!

I purchased my first one this year in February. Originally wanted a Ferrari, either a 1994 348 or a 1995 355, but my insurance agent and I couldn't come to terms when it came to the annual premium, ($7300 per year just for the Ferrari). I then went through the old "which Porsche to get" syndrome and I found this forum to be invaluable as I'm pretty sure anyone here will tell you. It was a toss-up between a 993 C4S and a 996 Millennium Edition. The fat *** won.

was given a used Mustang GT for high school graduating. Sold it for a 1975 pristine 914 2.0. Great car for autoX but sucked for everyday. No A/C but the most reliable car I've ever owned. Sold that for a 1983 GTV6 (love/hate).

Just bought my 993 several months ago. Yeah!!!!

I purchased my first Porsche 4 yrs ago 1986 911 Supersport (Turbolook to you yanks) at age of 52. Saw it on the dealers lot and fell in love with that sexy rear (reminded me of the wife a few years back) - sold her after two years (the car not the wife). Just bought a 13000 mile 97 C4S on the excuse that time is not on my side. At 56 the future begins to look shorter than the past! Also drive a crazy 300 bhp Morgan Plus 8 - a real street rod with pedals hinged from the floor just like the Porsche.

I bought mine 3 years ago, I was 35 then. It was second 993 in Estonia and it took time get used with all this attention. I bought it from the guy who imported second hand cars from Germany. One side fenders were crashed and it was fixed in Estonia. As chassis was perfectly straight i took the risk to buy crashed car and i never regretted the choice.

I bought my 96 C4 about two months ago after waiting and dreaming about it for 29 long and painful years. I saw the first 911 when I was 7 years old and did not even know what it was until my dad told me: It is a P-O-R-S-C-H-E. I cought the bug right there and then.

Well, my first Porsche, the 1974 914 2.0 was bought by my Dad new in 1974. He gave it to me in 1985 and I've had it since.

I didn't actually buy a Porsche until my neighbor, who had a 1989 911 3.2 asked me to go with him to look at a 1990 C4 that was for sale by a private party. I'm pretty sure he had no intention of buying it himself, just wanted to hook me.

I saw, I drove, I bought.

This to me is unbelievable. I worked slaved
and busted mu rear to buy my wife and my
kids a condo in the mountians. So I buy it last
year. Then the thing skyorckets in value.
i was going to refi it to get a lower interest
rate. My broker says "why bother what do
need 100K? 150K I can get you a equity line
of credit in 3 days. " So I got enough to buy
a 993 TT I hope. We'll see. I acutally had a 914 in
college but this is my first real one!
WWOOOOOOHHOOOOOOO!!
SHould get in in 3 weeks.

Nice thread going here...brings back some fond memories. I got the bug watching a movie in the late 60s or early 70s about a rich gal who drove a 911 and her ski bum boyfriend. He took the car for a fast drive up the hill to the ski resort and I was blown away. I have no idea what the movie was.

Add to that R&T mag and going the races a few times at Laguna Seca and the lust was there but I held out for years...there was always some prudent fiscally responsible thing to do.

Finaly the career was hitting stride and I could pull the trigger. I searched and learned for a year and my buddy was ordering the "last of the air cooled" (he got a '98 targa new). I closed a deal for Sun's largest server and picked up the 993. It was 1998 and the car was a '96 with 19k. I was 42 and after chasing the dot coms I felt like I had a lot more miles than years.

I don't work that hard anymore...and I enjoy the car a lot more!

I bought my first porsche at 19.
I grew up a surfer/volks mechanic in hawaii. Along the way
I bought a 1955 continental 356a in 1974 that had been raced and was dimpled throughtout, I spent a few months restoring and loved the car.
After many years driving "practical" cars, miata, maxima, rabbit, westfailia( and raising two kids), in 2002, I bought a 95 C4, I feel like I am "back home". I have now had this car for a year and have done all maintanence, the 90K was 10K back. I have to say that the difficuty of working on this car has been overplayed, it was not hard, like a girl I know raised in New York, a little high maininence, but once you get to know her, not so bad!

That's Downhill Racer with Robert Redford. It's a pretty good movie and the 911 is definitely sweet. The movie is often rerun on cable during the winter.

Every year for the last 4 years I test drove a 996 (convinced that I would click with it and would buy one) - it never happened. Had a chance seating in a 993 a couple of years ago and knew I wanted one (from the passenger seat!).
Spent the better part of the next 12 months looking for a car (as my duaghter got older and I needed a sportscar with a rear seat) - found one that sailed thru the PPI (only thing that came out of the PPI was that the rubebr seal under the badge was worn!).
A completely standard car with almost no options (17in wheels, no AC). Bought it just before Christmas Dec 02, sold my M Coupe a couple of days later and now I'm living the dream!!

cheers

Thanks Jon,

I was hoping somebody would recognize that movie! The depth and breadth of this board is astounding. I think you could post almost anything and get some great answers.

I will go out and rent this to relive the past!

Bought my first 911 (a black '84 Targa) used from some no-name dealer in L.A. in when I was 25. Sold it again after a couple of years after discovering valve guide problems and the fact that the dealer had probably lied about the mileage.

Spotted a beautiful midnight blue 993 C4S taking off in front of me from a toll booth on the Garden State Parkway a couple of years ago and I had a new dream car. Finally bought one last year after looking for 3 months.
