So why bother replacing the switch?

^^^ I know it's ****, but I would prefer the car be as it left the factory .. plus, down the road if the car fails to start, I'll know what it isn't.

JPP, excellent to hear that this is getting sorted out! Hope you can find another use for the contact cleaner.

I looked up Hartmann-codier.de and could not find any info on this switch.

Don't worry, I would be this way, too.

^^^ Thanks .. I am very optimistic. Tests including yesterday, I'm well up to 100 perfect starts at this point. I've probably shortened the life of the other components in the system by doing all the testing :-P

Anyway ... I used to have a full-on electrical/soldering tool box but it disappeared somewhere along the line ... so contact cleaner wasn't the only thing I stocked up on. Got a solder sucker too! I'm ready for bear now ... hee, heee ... :-)

JPP,

Your gonna replace the switch and then have to return
all your new tools. It'll take you twenty minutes.

^^^ No WAY! This was my excuse to justify getting that stuff .... I'm gonna use it to make one of those blade connector 'jumper' wires and keep that in my glove box :-) It will be the most expensive jumper wire EVA!!!

If you must replace the switch it looks from the posts above like the switch is a standard lever micro-switch made by any number of suppliers. I would go to an electronic supply web site and just buy one.

^^^ Already on it's way from the fatherland, should be here Wednesday. $60 bucks from Sunset, I get the correct factory part with the wire harness and clip connector... can't complain.

I'm still trying to figure out why you'd want to replace a known failure-prone, unnecessay switch with another (that might fail) and then state ".. plus, down the road if the car fails to start, I'll know what it isn't".

... So you don't respect my decision to return the system to it's original 'as designed/as delivered' state?

As Voltaire said: "I may not agree with what you say but I'll defend to the death your right to say it". Anytime I can eliminate a potential candidate to leave me stranded, I'll do it. Hence, I carry a spare DME relay, I've eliminated the infamous nylon ball sockets on the shift rod thanks to FD Motorsport's Golden Rod/SSK and I've by-passed the clutch microswitch....and I carry a spare battery in a small vial on the keychain with the IMMOBILIZER and the ignition key.

IMHO, its tough to argue with this logic Yet, as stated above, I still defend your right to do as you please with your car!

FD Motorsport's Golden Rod/SSK are on my Christmas list!

Well, thanks for that! ... hopefully I won't have to ask you for such extreme sacrifice ... I mean it's just a switch.
I have all of those things in place that you mentioned as well, and I've had the SSK/Goldenrod in since before I sent the car to 9m in 2011 .. but of course, I opted not to have Darin cut down the shift lever and chose instead to leave it at the higher position which brings the shifter (and your hand ..) an extra 3/4" closer to the steering wheel as Porsche intended. It's good to have choices

Quick update. Jesse at Sunset sent me pic's of the switch we ordered to verify it's the correct replacement part and as suspected, the item 18 shown in the PET for MY '97 and on is the clutch microswitch:
