Default Nov. Car & Driver Mag. "50 Years of Porsche"

Anyone read the November issue of Car & Driver? On page 047 the writer says on
the Porsche 993 "... it is possible to achieve a zero-to-60 time in the mid-fours. Push less hard, and the 993 feels about as quick as a new Toyota Camry V6." The author, a Mr. Tony Quiroga must have had a "writer's block"... too bad we cannot get better automotive journalists in Car & Driver? I will just have to give up the dribble and cancel my subscription!

Back to Excellence!!!

Too bad for overall they did a fair write up on 50 years of the 911...

Air-cooled Regards to my fellow Listers!

Bert

Actually, I wouldn't be at all surprised if the new Camry V6 has as much power as our old 993s, so he may indeed be not too far off the mark.

I think my C4S is a damn fine looking machine. But fast by modern standards? Not as much.

My thoughts exactly...I could not tell if it was a compliment. I also don't think you could get mid 4's out of NA 993 either.

V6 camry has about the same power and torque of 993 with only 200 more pounds of weigh compared to C4S.

C&D is just another rag that is barely a shadow of it's former self, trying to stay afloat in the a society that has no use for actually reading the printed word. The comment quoted above is no different that when Grassroots Motorsports did a slalom test comparing a Jaguar XKE and a Honda minivanwhatever....(The Honda won)...Would you rather dirve an XKE or a Honda? 993 or a Camry?...The bottom line is, does it really matter what some print journalist hack says about any car? No...No it doesn't...Except possibly Peter Egan.

Correct. But this was straight line, and further a comparison of "past (semi) exotic" v. current boring production. Rinse and repeat 35 years ago with a (then) 15 year old 356 v. some lard *** American family sedan.

Funny thing is that a stock/stockish 993 (my 4S, for example) is a couple seconds a lap slower than my Spec Miata on equal compound tires--RA1--at Thunderhill. Doubt it would take much tweaking of a Camry/Accord to get one to competently lap a track. Why you'd want to is the bigger question.

Not a Porsche comparison, but I always thought this segment from the now defunct "Car Show" was entertaining:

OMG that was a funny clip..."the Toyota Camry is the most boring car in the world(other guy leaning with one hand against it says)...my hand just fell asleep"

and yes, modern Camry's can have 300hp. Lots of modern "appliances" have more hp and torque. Probably beat our beloved's in a straight line, but add twists and turns, and some braking..no contest.

the bottom line really is that it doesn't matter what anyone says or writes. The only thing that should matter is what you personally feel about the car. If peter egan walked up to you and called your 993 a piece of ****, would it change your opinion? i hope not.

I read that article (series of articles) on the plane the other day. I thought it was very well done.

Of course not...My statement was just a nod toward Egan's recent semi-retirement and the fact that he is an unpretentious car guy that lives what he loves and has the ability to write about it in an entertaining way.

Dan O'Neil is the only other automobile writer in the same league with Peter Egan.

disagree. Dan Neil (not O'neil if I'm thinking of the right person) is a good writer in terms of technique and grammar, but his stories are mundane, he overuses similies and metaphors like crazy, and he doesn't seem to have nearly the same number of interesting stories. Egan's articles about rebuilding his e-type were very engaging. Dan Neil...eh, good one liner here and there, but not on the level.
