Default Sloan Cars - A dealership disguised as a collector

He has some cool over priced stuff. Does anyone get to test drive any car there? I had a couple of friends who made the trip there and were serious about buying a couple of 993's. They were not allowed to drive anything. Richard took them out separately on a 45 second test ride along. He said they were not insured to be driven by anyone else. He might have found the loop hole - call it a "collection" so you don't have to let people drive the cars yet still be able to sell them. Has anyone gotten a serious test drive in a Sloan car before deciding to purchase or not?

Loophole or not, there are many collector car and specialty dealerships that won't let you test-drive their cars.

Yes I can see both sides of that coin. I think might have better luck with a test drive at a specialty shop if you went alone, acted very sincere (not to say your friends didn't) and took your checkbook with you. Then again, maybe not.

These specialty shops typically have the best of the best (at a premium), and I can't say I blame them if they turned down a test drive considering most of their sales probably don't involve one.

Yeah it's a whole tricky feely thing at that level.

These are all low mileage, documented cars. Sloan is open to a PPI. I don't allow anybody to drive my cars either

One was a 56,000 mile 96 993? Hardly a collector car imo. I can inderstand not test driving a 3000 mile 67 911. They are his cars so I guess he can do whatever he wants to.

No, many of the cars at his showroom are not his, but cars placed there on consignment by other owners

True... When I was shopping for my C4S I went with RPM as Ray was IMO easier to work with (disclosure, I previously purchased a '98 C4S from him back in '99). If you have had prior relations with the seller, it makes a big difference in the subsequent purchasing experiences. Cars on consignment add another level of complexity, as no one wants their baby handled by anyone but the next owner.

my 2 cents... now worth .5 cents

I had an experience like this with the guys at the toy barn in columbus. I went with a bank check ready to purchase and they wouldn't let me test drive a car. I had my 13 year old son with me so I'm guessing they figured we were just tire kicking. They had lambos, ferrari's, bentley's, etc. and said they did 90% of their sales from the internet, so they weren't too interested talking to me.

Purchased my 993 from Sloan. A pleasure to do business with. I had PPI done and saw no need to do a "test drive." Very happy with my car and Richard was very accommodating - his cars are exactly as represented.

i must respectfully disagree with the OP....Richard is about 20 minutes from me and has always accommodated my desires to take his (and his customers) cars out for spirited drives...he and his son are very porschecentric and if they understand you know the brand...their cars are yours for the taking

hmmm. another 993 in the Merrimack Valley? What color are you? Where are you. :-)

We know Richard well, and he does work with us on our site so we're obviously biased, but I've been at the shop many, many times and seen cars go on test drives. On the same token, I've seen even more of his cars go out the door sight unseen to buyers across the country and the globe. With a PPI and good history, a test drive isn't really necessary unless you've never driven that model at all...
