Default Steering rack options?

my 1995 993 steering rack has finally had it.

What are my options as the dealer wants $3000.00 and labour for a new rack.

Rebuilt rack is probably the way to go. There are a number of them from $500 to $1,500. Read my caution about the one from BuyAutoParts (though others had better luck with them.

Pelicanparts.com has racks rebuilt by ZF for $1427. If your ealer won't order from Pelican then find a good independent.

L.A has been good to me. I want a new or rebuilt rack for this car as used will not suffice due to 4 hours labour and wheel alignment costs once it is installed.

I do need some other nic nacs therefore i may give L.A a call next week.....

I bought a used rack for my 964 from www.dcauto.com for ~$400 last summer. It's been in for more than a year and works great! [no affiliation with dc auto]

The job is really easy - more like 2 hours. Don't follow the instructions on P-car.com as the DIY recommends removal of tie rods from the car which isn't necessary. Tie rods can stay on the car (remove rack from tie rods). This way, you don't need an alignment.

Cheers,
Joe

I would not go with a used rack. They are fairly notorious weak spot My first 993 had the rack replaced at 30K miles. Second 993 had the rack go at 95K. Go for a reputable rebuild. I've heard good things about Zims as well. At $500 seems like a very good option.

Smile I am having my steering...

rack rebuilt by a San Fernando Valley (LA) guy, Lance Aspesi. The price is competitive....this guy can do anything, very impressed with his work. He builds Porsche race cars such as 996 Spec Series Cars, works on Cup Cars, rebuilds transmissions, motors...and is the hot ticket for any electrical/electronic gremlins. He just installed my FVD brake cooling ventilation kit, a real PITA on the driver's side due to the Ruf secondary oil cooler. Most mechanics/technicians would have pulled out their hair on this job: No problem for Lance. He just figured it out and got it done.

He runs a 1 man shop so turnaround is not as quick as shop that simply bolts in an exchange steering rack. If you are in a rush, don't consider Lance. But if you can wait for quality, Lance is your man.

He installed by RLC digital dash with in-engine sensors for oil temperature and oil pressure as well as an in-line brake pressure sensor. If Lance's approach is interesting to you, send me a PM.

BTW, I trailer my car to Lance's shop, a 4 hour tow, each way. I have a local mechanic for routine jobs, but for the challenging ones, I go to Lance.

$600 with a 6 month warranty from us, we sell em often and have had a very low return rate. I wouldn't say they fail more or less often than any other ZF rack if I had to, but with advancing age and the lack of mileage some of these cars get, they do fail. I'd consider an extended warranty if one wanted some piece of mind as well.

FWIW all my suppliers are currently out of stock on the rebuilt (actual) ZF rack at the moment. When they do have em they are $1300-$1500 or so.

Rennlist sponsor and they sell their racks for $600 and a 6 month warranty?
If they are re-built, go no further, call them and place your order. If they are just plain "used", if the rack fails again, big PITA to extract it, replace it and check the front end alignment, again.

Me? I am having my local guy rebuild my rack and do the R/R and alignment.

With all due respect, it doesn't make sense to pay $600 for a recycled unit, a re-built or brand new unit is the way to go.
