New Project Car-need some feedback
Afternoon Guys, I am the proud new owner of my very first 911. 95 993 C2 with 150k on the clock - that runs but does not move. Bought the car for next to nothing because I knew the transmission was shot. As I prepare to drop the motor and dive into this job I wondered what you guys might think of the symptoms as I see them so far.
When I was presented the car, I was told that the car was stuck in 3rd gear and that the clutch had been going out for some time. Previous owner was given a 'buzz off' quote on the repair for $15k - thus the sale. As I work the car up, I notice the clutch does engage(because the car will stall if the pedal isn't on the floor). Shifter is clearly not connected to anything, which could be linkage or internal transmission. When on jack stands, with wheels removed, I let the clutch out to see what would happen. Answer is that only one drive shaft is spinning(the other is not seized, it just isn't receiving drive). So now I'm thinking the diff may be chewed up too.
It should be said that I have no intention of attempting the repair on the tranny myself - I'll go with a pro on that - but I am curious if this is a known issue or common failure with high mileage
Problem List - as I see it
1. Linkage?
2. Internal component failure of transmission
3. Differential(unclr if its fitted with the limited slip diff)
Motor needs a tune up, oil change and probably assorted new gaskets since it has been sitting for some time. I'll shake that stuff down more thoroughly once I get the car moving.
Thanks all for your insight - look forward to adventure to come!

With an open differential, it would not be unusual for only one wheel to be spinning.
Is the shifter "limp" in all gears? This would tend to be linkage. The selector rod engages different internal mechanisms depending on what gear you are engaging. If all of them are disconnected, I would start looking at the linkage outside the transmission. That is a pretty simple check.

Well, I wouldn't characterize it as limp in all gears. It moves without resistance forwards and backwards as if that movement did not correspond to a mechanical change at/within the gearbox. Side to side - it is very difficult to move. In fact, it doesn't move much at all beyond what appears to be the 3rd-4th gear shift row. There is significant resistance when I try and force it over to the 1-2 or 5-6 row.
I bought the car expecting I'd be in for a full rebuild on the transmission and a new clutch but, I figure it never hurts to throw the question out to those who know the car better than I do.

Jealous! Would love a high-mileage 993 with 'issues'.
Unless you intend to drop the engine in order to refresh things, be aware that the transmission can be removed without too much trouble.
Leaving the engine in place retains your alignment, although it sounds like the car could stand a thorough going-over.
Post some pics when you have time.

As noted above, pull the center tunnel cover underneath the car. There is a plastic cup that the shift lever articulates in and it is not uncommon to fail with age and fall off, and thus no gears engage.

I think you may be very lucky and have got a bargain there mate!
Sound to me as a dodgy gear linkage. As mention remove the tunnel cover under the car and inspect the linkage near the gearbox could just be a loose or missing bolt.
