Finally was able to remove the motors. The thin metal trim piece above the gearbox (when the top is fully opened) had to be unfastened and tipped slightly. I did not break the bond between the trim piece and the top material.

Upon opening the gearbox, a broken tooth was found on the helical gear. Will now rotate the gear as suggested in other Rennsport posts, and see what happens.
