Quite a few irregularities in the guide, as usual. When you read the text, you realize the C2S was produced in the fewest numbers for the normally aspirated models. Yet the pricing is the lowest. Only a $5,000 premium over a C2 when considering apples-to-apples (miles, condition, options)?!?
They are all increasingly hard to come by, so it's very hard to peg a "baseline". I know for insurance purposes I keep pushing up my agreed-value. When I bought years ago there were perhaps 7-8 nice examples of a C2S in the "low miles" range to pick from. Today, I don't think there are any other than the ultra-high priced ones.
Noticed how on the 996 GT3 they had a photo of... a 997 GT3.
it is interesting to see the jump in value for our cars lately. I see it all the time, especially when I am out driving it. I can't tell you how many "want to sell your car" questions I get lately! I don't think I will ever sell unless I need to for some reason or another. Good that all 993 models seem to be climbing in value.
I wish someone with the pull would tell KBB and NADA about the values. Why are these supposedly expert evaluators the last to know or accept that they are wayyyyyyyyyy off target??
Does anyone have access to an insurance company appraisal system? We recently had an accident and the carrier ran numbers and I was amazed at the amount of information on actual car values it had, including type of equipment, mileage, etc. Far superior to NADA / KBB / etc. It was called "CCC One" and it would be very interesting to run a few examples of C2, C2S, C4, C4S, etc. through that system.
My C4S is a '96. According to the price guide it doesn't exist! What the heck!
I found a good use for the pricing guide
kidding aside,
Bravo for producing this guide.
we just need to consider it a "guide to possible valuation", not a definitive reference.
i'm going to read the part regarding leasing versus buying to see how badly we got ripped by initially leasing the 997, then buying out the lease....
In defense of Excellence, prices are a moving target and yes, there are a few omissions, but I thought it was a fairly comprehensive guide. Nothing is written in stone and it should be as a guide, as the name suggests.
I agree Ilko, it would just be nice if their numbers had some sense of the "available market". Something like "asking prices range from..." Any quick google / ebay / autotrader / cars.com / global autosports / sloan / holt / Excellence Online / etc. would show available cars, mileage, condition, and asking price.
Whenever I see one of those guides I shake my head and think "where, oh where is the top of the C2S market only $50,000?"
I too agree with pricing variations being the difficult target, I had my C2S appraised for insurance purposes, here in Canada by insurance company, as 19A "Agreed Value" and had to be appraised by a certified appraisal company.
It is still listed accordingly as valued at $ 71,000.
Jut to add more fodder to issue, except that this is real!
Two weeks ago a C2S was for sale at the Porsche dealer in Bend Oregon at the asking price of $ 80,000...
what happened as it was not listed all that long?
There was also a Rennlist note about an insurance company paying out $ 70,000 for a C2S... It was a "write-off", I'm beginning to think I need another, newer appraisal.
