One Year of 993
Apologies in advance for waiting so long for an introduction. Been a crazy year. But the good news is...pictures! (I'll actually apologize in advance for the sheer quantity). Was inspired by XavierLaFlamme's recent 1st anniversary post, and his cross-country adventures in what could easily be mistaken for the exact same car.
I'd been looking for a Black/Black 993 C4S for a few years, but (as I'm sure many of you can identify with), it seemed like they always slipped through my fingers. I watched the market flood with widebodies during 2009, and then just as quickly watched the inventory and prices start to climb. So of course, at the worst possible time (last June as I was getting ready to deploy to Afghanistan for a year) this car popped up for sale in Seattle. 76k miles, Hardbacks, 996 turbo wheels, all the aluminum bits, FDM short shift/goldenrod; exactly what I had been looking for. And I was first in line!
Well I'm stationed in Georgia, so I had a PPI done, and I quickly cancelled all my previous plans for pre-deployment leave. Instead it was WA->OR->CA->AZ->NM->TX->OK->KS->MO->IA->IL->KY->TN->GA, in about 3 weeks.
Here's me, giddily behind the wheel for the first time, and the car as she was when I picked her up:

The trip south was rather uneventful; pictures here are driving through Redwoods National Park and then giving her a bath for the first time near Lake Tahoe:

I was able to convince my good friend from Santa Barbara (also from my hometown in Iowa) to make the drive east with me. I don't remember people being so eager to pull the driving shift in my old Geo Metro...
We safely made it to Iowa, and then I took it down to Georgia and into storage, and jumped on the big bird to Afghanistan.

No 993's in this post, but a few images from the interim 11 months playing in the sandbox. Lots of time being ferried around in Blackhawks and uparmored Suburbans, not quite the same....but still a lot of fun.

Had some work done while I was gone...some good friends took her in for an early 90k service, and made sure she got plenty of exercise. Only issue when I got back was a floppy rear split grille, which was an easy fix with the help of some potato chip bag clips.

BTW, some of those are pretty large. You can resize w/ something like IRFanview. No big deal here, I use Firefox w/ MouseZoom add-on and it's just a matter of holding the right mouse button and spinning the scroll wheel to resize, but some might not have it so easy.
Too cool.
Just curious, who did the PPI?
So many cool road-trip threads lately. Thanks for sharing.

Then it was back on the road....this time 30 days of leave, and an itinterary of GA->SC->NC->VA->DC->MD->DE->NJ->NY->CT->MA->ON->MI->IL->IA. The first few days were nothing but torrential rain, and I was pretty miserable...until I got to the beach.

A few snapshots from the trip north....the White House, Times Square, and one of my favorite drives in the US, the Merritt Parkway.

Next I spent a few days with friends in CT, and I let this little guy's Dad take him for a Father's Day blast through the countryside. He thought it was AWESOME.

Then to Detroit, where I visited my Uncle...who then proceeded to back out of the garage into my car. So that meant cutting the trip a bit short, so I could get home to a bodyshop in Iowa and get my daily driver.

Work only took a few days, some gorgeous cars being restored in the shop. Mercedes specialty shop in Clinton, Iowa (very random), did great work. This would have made my Fister Stage III install the week prior a bit simpler...

And one last shot a few days ago before I put her back into storage. I'll be moving to Hawaii in a few months, so sadly she'll be in storage in Portland, OR for a few years. For the time being, that just means another road trip in a few months
