Default Odometer Gear

Hello Folks,

Any recommendations on a local place to have the odometer gear replaced in the Maryland area?

I read Brian's excellent write up and although it sounds easy, it would probably cost me four kegs of Guinness to fix it if I try the repair.

I am a little nervous shipping it across the country to North Hollywood Speedo.

If anyone local has had success I am happy to supply draughts of Leiney Summer Shandy and/or Landshark plus meals and expenses for the help.

Thanks for any assistance.

Tim

Not sure about the local part, but I had my odometer fixed by this shop. Here is their ebay listing http://www.ebay.com/itm/171065878726

He did a great job, and it looks just like new. You do have to ship it to him, but as long as you pack it up well it should be fine. Their prices were pretty fair too.

Lauderdale speedomeeter is asking me 178$ to do it. The gear is 20$ on eBay... I think I will do it myself.

I did mine, but had to do it 2x since I left the tiniest piece of gear in there accidentally. Some of my lights in the housing haven't worked since. I've been meaning to pull it out and fix it...for several years now. And my bezel, which looks good from the front (be VERY careful removing it), isn't properly clamped on since you need special tools to "do it right".

Yeah, it wasn't hard to do. Now, I'd probably send it to NHS for the $200...

Default Odometer Gear

Palo Alto Speedometer usually has several in for repair. Their fee is $159.00. They will install either the original "soft gear" from VDO or the aftermarket "hard gear" that many are aware of on this forum. Pulling the speedometer can be easy if the rubber boot mount is greasy like mine was.....

Tim,
I've sent more than one hundred (100) 993 clocks to North Hollywood Speedometer over the last 7 years to have lenses cleaned, dials replaced, bezels replaced, etc. Not once have I had an issue with the work they performed.

Highly recommended.

Had mine done at PA Speedo in Feb. didn't know about the hard or sift gear option though. Works as it should. One day turn around too. Hard to beat that.

I have taken a couple of speedos to Paul's Speedometer in Redondo Beach. Usually runs $125. Satisfied customer.

It is a DIY but you can mess it up badly if something goes wrong. You should have some confidence in your abilities or better spend the 150. I did one ODO myself (successfully) and the next one with one of the recommended experts. Key for me was the lack of tool to pry open the case. It is clearly visible now (from the back) that the ODO was opened. The experts have tools, that you do not see anything which made me going this route for my other 993.

This is perhaps the easiest diy on a 993. You have to take it out of the dash to mail it off anyway, so you've done half the repair right there. Kind of silly that the little plastic gear costs so darn much, though.

Anyone have any luck with ordering the gear off ebay? If so which one did you get?
