There is always the possibility of an old/weak ISV especially with a LWF although the '96s aren't known to be problematic.

To my ear, this sounds like the situation where the ISV may need to be cleaned thoroughly. I use carb cleaner and flush it out really well. You will know when it clean enough when the valve inside of it can wiggle freely when you rotate the ISV.

Thanks for that. Since the battery light is on with the engine off and off when the engine is on, all is well according to their "checking charging system" chart. I do want to go through the exercise of checking the connections at the alternator for piece of mind, however as I have had ground issues in the past.
