Default HELP! Key won't turn.

My 993 is stranded in a parking lot. Went to start it and key will not turn. Got the backup key and it also won't turn. I've searched the forums and a lot about the immobiliser but nothing I could find about the key simply not turning. Any advice would be appreciated! I hope I'm just missing something obvious.

Wiggle the steering wheel; that should free up the key from turning.

+1 You probably inadvertantly locked your steering when you parked. Happened to me once. A little freaky the first time.

On a related note my key felt kind of sticky or catchy when turning. I little graphite powder on the key cured this for me.

U7 -- I"m hoping that's the braindead thing I didn't try which is so obvious but possible I just didn't do it enough. Now I have to go back and try.

I've not heard of this as a common issue for Porsches but from my BMW experience this happens occasionally and requires intervention with power tools to drill out a sheared pin internal to the lock barrel.

The immediate question to recover you from the parking lot is have you relieved pressure against the steering lock - if there's a load against it, it can be very difficult to get the locking pin to release.

Try turning the steering wheel both into and against the lock while you twist the key and see if that let's you unlock the system.

Best of luck!

Thanks Tian and everyone. It was pure bonehead user error on my part. I didn't realize that the steering has a locking mechanism (my Audi does but I'm used to it). Yep just jiggled the wheel a little and started right up. LMAO. I thought crap I gotta call a tow truck etc. Okay that will never happen again or if it does take away my rights to the 993 lol.

That all said, the keys do feel a little worn, so I should look into getting a new one!
