Default Custom Shift **** Project

Recently I removed the Fabspeed super cup exhaust from my car. It was about a 7 year relationship (don't know where time went) with the cups. It was fun for a most the time but started to drive me crazy at the end.

After going back to stock + motor sound box, which i really have enjoyed recently, I have been on a mission to fix any noises/rattles that I couldn't hear with the supercups. The break squeal never bothered me till now. I used to swap the pads for track pads a couple times a year, so I'd forego the pad spider installation.

Years ago I thought I had fixed the shift **** rattle by tightening the 5mm allen set screw. But I found that the rattle was still there after I went stock exhaust. After trying many of the fixes, even athletic tape on the lever and jamming **** on, I determined it was the construction of the **** that was rattling

My car came with pretty heavy interior options... full red leather and root wood shifter/e-break. Like many on this forum, I'm not crazy about wood on a 993 interior. But the root wood shifter and lever never really bothered me enough to replace it. And like many on here, I like to do modifications but still have the "stock look."

Before I discovered the **** was still rattling, the red leather skin of the H-pattern wore off the ****. I was sent dye 2x, and both times it was the wrong red... see pictures below. So the wrong color, the unfixable rattle, combined with the fact I really didn't like the shape of the ****, led me to look else where...

I found this guy...
http://customwoodshiftknobs.com/
and commissioned him to make this ****...
http://customwoodshiftknobs.com/P606.html
I didn't want to get into changing the root wood/red leather e-brake, so I opted to go with a custom wood **** to try and match things up

Stock root wood shifter with wrong color leather paint on H-pattern. Please disregard the carpets, they really are not faded/soiled and look much better in person...

Stock Root wood shifter in hand with H-pattern removed (I ran it like this the last few weeks) and new **** installed...

H-pattern I pried off root wood shifter. It is actually card board with a thin leather over, embossed with pattern...

beautiful interior, is the gauge trim leather?
the wood is a nice accent to the rest of the red leather and black trim.
and while I have nothing against the wood accent, I would suggest finding a black
shift lever/****(keeping the red leather boot) similar to a rothsport just to try out.
it might look very good. if you liked it then you'd be stuck trying to find a similar e-brake
handle which would be a pain.

Thanks for the compliments...
Interior is FLamenco Red-full leather... looks better in person, I have a terrible time getting decent pictures of the interior, carpet always comes up off color in pictures
Gauge rings are also red leather, my favorite option besides the leather dash

I am happy with the size of **** and like the driving experience of the sphere shape compared to the shape of the root wood shifter

The rothsport shifter looks really nice and had considered it at one point.

I wasn't trying to spend too much getting shift **** problem fixed and wanted to look some what stock/original option

Interior...

Justin, how is the new **** attached to the flat shifter? Is it hollow inside and uses a set screw or did he do something specific to attach to Porsche shifter?

$175 sounds pretty steep. But it does look nice as does red interior.

Mike-
I figured you might chime in on this thread... some of the threads you posted in the past led me to want to go this route

Yes, hollow inside with set screw. I actually had him do one at 12 and 6 o'clock in hopes that it will be less likely to rattle/come loose

adaptor ...

As far as price goes, I found it reasonable for what I was trying to accomplish... my wife didn't even notice the new **** when we took the car to dinner saturday night. I wanted to match the root wood lever, which you can't see the difference with naked eye, really only shows up with camera flash. Workmanship is very good.

Justin, you beautiful man, you This adapter is exactly what I've been looking for. My idea is to get it threaded on top and have corresponding thread inside the ****.

In your case, I think it'll be solid there with two set screws. One thing I might suggest is that if you are using sharp-ended set screw, drill a tiny starter hole where the set screws dig into the adapter. That would make the connection more positive and less likely to back out. Although my current Rennline **** is attached with a single set screw and it's perfectly fine.

The ****, as I've said, looks good and I'm a big fan of wooden ***** unlike most guys on Rennlist, it seems. I think it looks right at home with red interior. Very classy old school, just the way I like it.

the set screws in my case actually make contact with the shift lever.
I actually had to use some pretty good downward pressure to push the **** on with the adaptor which makes a pretty nice compression fit

see picture of adaptor...
http://www.928motorsports.com/parts/...obAdapter4.jpg

adaptor straddles stock lever and is a tight fit. It slightly spreads the adaptor and makes a tight fit for the ****

Justin, can you tell me how tall the adaptor is, approximately?

I'll probably order a couple to play with. A very neat thing and I can always have a wooden **** drill and have these glued in if need be.

Great find! Thanks again, Justin!
