Default Shifting Issue with Neutral

I've noticed on my 95 C2 that when the car isn't running I have trouble moving through Neutral (i.e. side to side). If the shifter is say in 5th gear, I can't move to neutral and over to the 1-2 gate without first shifting into 3rd or 4th. It feels like I come up against something hard in neutral about in line with the 3-4 gate.

With the car running I don't recall noticing this. Is this typical or is there something a-miss in the trans? I disconnected the linkage and actuated the shift shaft directly by hand and same issue, in and out is smooth but rotating is notchy and requires playing around to get to all the gears.

Thanks.

Gears don't tend to synchronize when nothing is turning. First gear synchro teeth are usually of a design that lets one shift into first if nothing is turning. The other gears - not. I am not an expert but don't look for issues that probably don't exist.

Thanks for the reply, I agree with your statement however the issue I seem to be experiencing is with traversing neutral, it will go into all the gears no problem. It struck me as odd since the first thing I do before I start a manual car is slide the shifter side to side to verify its in neutral; with my car it hangs up.

I have a rough understanding of how the shift mechanism works and I believe that the shift shafts are not aligning for some reason. From what I can tell the main shift rod has a lever on it inside the transmission that engages the various shift shafts when it rotates and moves up and down. I presume if the shafts aren't in alignment when neutral is selected then the main shift rod will bind/hang up as it tries to pass freely across the shift shafts.

Am in in the ballpark? If so is this adjustable or what could cause these to misalign?

Thanks.

You may have something wrong, but as noted, cars are made to shift when running.
