Thx guys. I'm bummed. Thought I got lucky.

Everyone go replace their fan belts now! Kidding aside, Steve W mentioned that it is pretty hard to tell when they are worn, and he replaces more often than Porsche recommends. I can see why.

Shazbot!!

Its not the 'worse case scenario' when belts fail, but its damned close. Might you have bitten the wrong person in a previous life??

I hate to throw money (a customer's or mine) at things, however I'm a proactive person since I deplore unplanned failures. In the grand scheme, belts are pretty cheap so I replace them at regular intervals just to forestall events such as these. Such maintenance regimens oftentimes are less than factory recommended intervals, however I've found much better reliability using this MO.

Works well for street machines as well as race cars.

Apparently I did more than just bite the wrong person...

Shop just called and as they've torn down, they found more fan bits in the tray, so yes, looks like belt broke, randomly ended up in the fan, which then broke 2 blades, which then fell down and dinged up the crank pulley. Somewhere in there something poked out through the tail too. Forgot to mention that little jewel...

Update.

They found all the pieces of the fan. One down under the pulley once they pulled it out. I'll post more pics, but it seems the fan blade may have been damaged somehow, as instead of just a clean break, it looked dirty, perhaps indicating fatigue.

Hard to say as they aren't old air cooled gurus, but the theory is that the fatigued fan blade gave way, severing the one next to it and one of those 2 then severing the belt and the severed one falling down to F up the pulley.

One of those pieces or the fan then took out the bit of the tail.

And I'm missing the Glen this weekend now.

JPS... I had the same issue happened last year. I dropped the engine today, and found lots of little pieces.. :-(..

I also lost my ALT, and the entire wiring harness burned. I also got a little extra gift in the rear lid...Must be the Midnight BLue Met....

I showed the pieces to a metallurgist and he indicated that in my case, the black bubbles in the core of blades was due to oxygen getting into the cooling cycle of the magnesium. Basically a it was time bomb waiting to happen...

Lucky US....
