Dear RL'ers, I find myself in dire need with my oil leak. I brought the car to the "stealership" this morning and they said it would be a minimum of $900 to figure it out. The car doesn't leak too much, but there is a small puddle under the engine on the right side. I thought it would be the 2nd oil filter, and it's not. Any thoughts, suggestions would be appreciated.
I just realized I posted this in the 993 section. The car is a 1997 993 TT
Confirm you have OEM Porsche oil filters and properly torqued.
Make sure oil is proper viscosity (15W50 or 20W50), and not overfilled.
Could be lower valve covers & gaskets.
Both oil filters were changed when I had an oil change at the dealership. I saw oil under the right side of the car and I got annoyed and brought the car back. They told me there is an oil leak on the top or somewhere near the top and then it travels down to the right rear of the car. Then they said it will be $900 to fix and they might have to drop the engine. Regardless, the starting price would be $900 and go from there. As you can see, there isn't too much room to get to anything
Unless the leak was there before you took it in for an oil change, it sounds like they filled it too fast, resulting in overflow that caused the puddle. Pretty common mistake for someone who doesn't know 993's (i.e., a Porsche dealer mechanic in the year 2013). Ashamed to admit I did it myself my first oil change on the 993 -- didn't realize how slowly you have to fill it.
I'd clean up the mess, drive the car for a few days, and then re-inspect. I'll bet the "leak" is gone...

Excellent advice.....Don't get frustrated. Just take your time and you can probably solve this yourself.

Especially if the pull-out accordion filler neck with built-in screen is still in place.
In my case, it was a split/tear in the pull-out accordion filler neck.
I'm not sure I would take this car to the dealer. Like someone else said, so many good independents around that are more likely to have 993's in frequently.
