Where's the signal light flasher
 

I'm in the process of changing all light bulbs to LED on my 993, so I purchased an LED flasher in order to avoid the quick flashing issues associated with LED bulbs. The problem I'm having is locating the old flasher, I hear it behind the instrument cluster but I don't know how to get to it for replacement. It's not accessible from under the dash, so how do I get to it? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Some relays are inside dash at the left side. You can pry/pull the instruments, which are held in place only by the rubber ring around each one to access. Use car not to scratch the instrument trim rings or ding the dash trim. Here is how they are on my 1995:

964 618 103 00, instruments brightness control, smaller of two, toward front.

928 618 102 03, seat belt warning, taller one, toward rear.

Inside center console, access panel on R side:

1H0-953-227, turn signal/flasher relay

Rennlist comment: “They must have changed the location of the turn signal/flasher relay, as my '97's is in the trunk compartment way behind the driver's side hood hinge.”

Above passengers toes, behind glove box.....spoiler up/down control relay.

In my '97, the flasher relay is buried behind the driver's side hinge on the front hood, just to the left of the steering column. Lift the hood, turn you flashers on, reach up behind the hinge and you can feel the relay clicking. There are two relays back there. I think the one you are looking for is the one closest to the steering column.

I tried reaching in the right side hood hinge and unfortunately my hand is too big and it won't fit in there, but I do hear the flasher clicking. I'll have to ask my wife to reach in there and pull the flasher. I'll let you know how it turns out. Thanks Terry and Bobby!

I changed the flasher on my car for the same reason. Here are a few tips that helped me.

First, the flasher is located on the drivers side of the car. It is tucked back behind the hood shock:

Remove the top connector for the hood strut. Do not drop! Move the strut out of the way.

Find someone with small hands that can reach into the small opening and replace the relay. It is the smaller of the two relays closest to you.

I verified this morning where my flasher is located, used my stethoscope to detect the clicking sound source since I cannot fit my hand in there. I will now try to move the hood strut out of the way as boxpilot recommended. Thanks.

In addition to releasing top of Hood Strut, remove Cowl Panel by pulling up on rubber at front of the pane.l (first image) Once front is off, lift front part about 45-degrees and push down slightly on the rear edge. Then pull out toward front of car. That makes access a LOT easier for those of us with fat hands/fingers. Use a plastic tool to pry flasher up. (second image) Make note of position of prongs.

Suggestion: wrap a white cloth around strut when removing lock clip & pin. That way if you drop either it won't disappear into the bowels of that compartment. Same when replacing.

I found it super easy to pull out by popping out the left-most fuel gauge. It sits right behind there. There are two relays in a small board, one is your door open buzzer, the other is the turn signal relay.

There's enough room back there from this approach to get your hand on either relay and just pop it out.

Check out the thread below and the post at #116. Some good pics on how to remove the oil gauge. I've got big hands, but still managed to squeeze my hand in and pull the relay. Good practice for rotating your speedometer. Great mod, good luck!
