Question AirBag

Good Morning!

My airbag warning light is on. I had a mechanic read the code, and it shows the control modual has gone bad.

I found one online (it is even near enough I can just go pick it up). So the question is...

How hard a job is the exchange? I know it is in a tough to get to position under the dash. But is the actual exchange that difficult?

Thanks,
--Joe

you need a special socket and 993 ones are nla
The supersession is a 996 one which needs to be programmed by PIWIS to work in a 993.

If the one you found doesn't work out let me know as I never installed it and would like to sell it.

I've just had a major pita with my airbag module which faulted and needed replacing with a 996 module. The 996 modules need reprogramming and my local Porsche dealership was unable to do this to the replacement module with their PIWIS 2 - and their PIWIS 1 had been disabled by Porsche to prevent black market sales of the units.

Porsche even coded a unit at the factory to my VIN and air freighted it out to my dealer here in NZ but still it didn't work - showing a seat belt buckle code (wasn't even a feature on 996s until 2002 apparently).

In the end they found a working PIWIS 1 in Australia, sent it over and that worked to reprogramme the seat belt buckle code out. The dealership spent 21 hours labour on what should have been a 2 hour job so they'll be seeking redress from Porsche I imagine.

I hope your experience is better.
