Default OEM Auto Dim Mirror Installed

I had missed out on an open box one on the Rennlist a few months ago for a good price so I was pleasantly surprised a new one was available from Sunset for $170 and that there were only a few left in Germany...so I decided to go for it.

Wiring is straight forward - you can choose wire it into the sunroof wiring but I decided to go factory which means going through the dash.

Nice, Ben. Can you elaborate on the wiring through the dash?

I also see your c4s cutaway poster on the wall. I just got one recently too.

These are the official instructions -

Models Affected: 1995 911 Carrera and 911 Carrera 4
1996 911 Carrera, Targa, Turbo, C4 and C4S
Concern: Service installation of automatic dimming inside rearview mirror.
General Information: Service installation of automatic dimming rearview mirror
part number, 000 044 800 10, is possible on
vehicles with the large base rearview mirror
from the following VIN's:
99 X SS 32 0898 Coupe
99 1 SS 34 0546 Cabriolet
Installation Procedure: - Disconnect the battery and remove the inside rearview mirror
using special tool 9578.
- Extend the 3 wires of the wiring harness on the automatic dimming
rearview mirror by 1.5 meters (5 feet), using an orange wire to
extend the red wire of the dimming mirror, a brown wire to extend
the black wire, and a grey wire to extend the white wire.
- Solder the extended wires to the existing mirror wiring and use
shrink tubing to insulate the connections.
- Attach the automatic dimming mirror to the mirror base. Apply the
supplied double sided tape to the windshield from the mirror base
to the upper inside rubber trim of the windshield.
- Run the wiring harness against the double sided tape up to the
inside rubber trim of the windshield. Route the wiring harness
along the windshield trim and down the left side A-Pillar. Attach the
supplied harness cover to the mirror and extend it up to the inside
windshield rubber trim.
- Remove the defroster vent, clock, left side large and small combigauge.
Remove the top padded dashboard cover.
- Route the wiring for the inside mirror through the opening where
the A-pillar and the dashboard meet. Route the wiring harness of
the automatic dimming mirror into the driver’s footwell area,
through the grommet of the main harness located near the left side
of the tachometer.

Installation Procedure cont’d: - Route the wiring along the main wiring harness to the A/C heater
control unit. Remove the A/C heater control and remove the G and
K connectors from the A/C heater control unit.
- Connect the brown wire to plug connection K1 (terminal 31) and
connect the orange wire to connection G35 (terminal 15) of the
A/C heater control main wiring.
- Connect the grey wire to connection G21 (backup light signal), on
vehicles up to VIN 99 SS 32 1453 Coupe and 99 SS 34 1224
Cabriolet. The G21 wire may not be installed in the 35 pin G connector,
however, if approximately 2 inches of insulating tape is
removed from the harness, it can be located. Attach the grey wire
directly to that wire. On vehicles with VIN's higher than the above
mentioned VIN's, connect the grey wire to connection G7.
- Reinstall the dashboard trim, defroster vent, gauges and A/C
heater control unit. Reconnect the battery, set the radio code and
clock to the correct time.
Testing Mirror: - With the vehicle sitting in daylight and the ignition switched on,
cover the photo sensor on the forward facing side of the mirror with
electrical tape. The mirror should darken. Remove the tape from
the photo sensor; the mirror should lighten.
- With the vehicle sitting in daylight and the ignition switched on,
cover the photo sensor on the forward facing side of the mirror.
Engage reverse gear of the transmission; the mirror should lighten.
Take the transmission out of reverse; the mirror should darken. Be
sure to remove the tape from over the photo cell on the forward
facing side of the mirror after testing.
Parts Information: Automatic Dimming Rearview Mirror Kit
part number, 000 044 800 10

Ben,

I was trying to install this last night, except mine has blue/red, brown and blue/black wires already attached. How did this compare to yours?
