Over the winter months I have continued to thoroughly go through my '96 C4. I recently discovered the Guide Tube (#15 in the borrowed picture below) is installed backwards compared to what is shown in PET and the repair manual.
Is there any reason to install the guide tube backwards on purpose?

Thanks,
Tony

Tony, just FYI, generally the PET diagrams aren't reliable when it comes to actual assembly
they show exploded views for part ID only.
If you followed the diagram you'd also install the shift lever backwards
Which has been done
In this case the diagram is correct
To your question, on an AWD 993 there is no reason that front rod would be reversed
Likely, someone just popped it on that way.

I suspect you are correct. The ball on the bottom of the shift lever looks like it was hit with a chisel & hammer and the cup was full of cosmoline. Lots of other evidence of a very poor installation.
