Default A clearer glimpse of what's ahead

After 19 years and 74K miles, it's time: New Windscreen! Got the goodies this week, now to stay in town long enough to get it installed.

The glass shipped from Ontario, CA to Sunset in OR, then to San Diego, via UPS.

It was packaged pretty well, and had the upright/upset indicators on the box to ensure it didn't get layed down flat.

^^ Ed, did you buy this directly from Sunset to insure you were getting factory glass? I'd bet it's cheaper as well, but now you have to find an installer, right?

Local place always quoted about 950 for factory glass plus install. Sunset cheaper?

Get a WELL QUALIFIED SHOP WHO KNOWS THESE CARS to do the job. It's really not an easy task to do it right!

^^^ Did we ever nail down the 'template' and lower shims that the factory uses to fit the glass properly? My coupe's replacement, at $1800 plus tax, had to be redone twice and that was at a HIGHLY recommended South Bay body shop, all factory glass and seals. I picked up the car, started driving up towards Oakland and the outer seal sucked into the passenger side gap and started whistling, I didn't even make it out of San Jose ...
The second time it was the other side across the top and I was flying in for each episode from Seattle .. ugh.

I "see" we have competing threads on the subject today. Mine was good for 135K (dealt with it for a further 10K), and today on the trip home will be the last time I have to look at that long, horizontal crack right in my field of vvision. Well, other than the 2 milea to the glass place. Hoping for no corrosion issues hiding.

That was my goal. Anecdotal comments seem to show there is only one supplier these days, but I went to Sunset to be sure. About $875 for glass and seals, but I had to buy a new $55 mirror, as my M718 '95 apparently has the slower 964 mirror, that was changed over sometime mid-year. My car was delivered in early '94.

I'd also already done the homework on the preferred installer here in San Diego, and they had no problem with me providing my own factory parts.

I also bought a new rear outer seal, and will have them do that too.

PS-if you look at some of the threads these last few years, current pricing seems milder than just a few years ago. I expected the glass to be about $1200, so I was pleasantly surprised with Andraya's quote.

Ed,
Are you having them install the 996 part number "rope" as well to prevent future squeaking?

Good question Keith-I've not decided yet. Some discussion with the installers first.

Eric,
http://www.citywideautoglass.com/
I've used them on the 993, as well as several SD RLers....can't recall if it was an email thread or here on RL where that discussion took place.
