You can get these result very easily if you use mineral spirits:
1. apply to cool metal
2. use unscented mineral spirits
3. apply very lightly with a small paint brush and let sit for 20 minutes
4. agitate with a light brush and redab as needed
5. use a soft plastic scaper for heavier build up
6. avoid rubber and plastic parts
7. wash off with dawn/hot water spray followed by warm water
Mineral spitis are very cheap.
Other more expensive items like Xenit and Zymol Strik work OK (not as well) and cosrt alot more - ask me how know.

Dplus: I'm inspired. Been thinking about this for a couple of years now.....thanks. Think I'll go at this in phases though. I imagine this taking a bit of time, no?

On some of the tough to remove cosmoline found on the aluminum suspension parts, I used lacquer thinner.

Wow nice work; here in the NE we have to clean the car constantly once the cosmo comes off...especially driving this time of year when there is more salt and sand on the road than snow!
