Default World record number of 993's get tie rod pinned today in San Diego County!

...at least we think so!

Our local machinist expert Peter made a new drill jig for us, and we broke it in today, with 5 different cars! Javier visited for a bit too, in his 964.

Since I got on the lift first(!), I was number one in line. Then Keith was up with his S, then Craig and his S, then Brian and his cab, then Nick and his S.

Some pics, and I think Peter will make this available for loan soon. The ol' lift hasn't been used in a while, but got a workout today. The only casualty was one carbide bit-too brittle for the jig and hand drilling. We all got a workout drilling too.

What a fun day for a bunch of San Diego-based RLers!

Ed, looks like fun times there. Pardon the noob question, but what does tie rod pinning do or benefit?

No bother at all-I just got educated myself on the specific goal and benefit.

The tie rods, by design, have some "slop" in them. I've seen that it can be 2 or 2.5mm of play. The RS versions don't have that, but to change to them costs pretty significant $, as other parts have to be changed to work with them. I think Garth S was the first to try this, and others have done it and been happy with the results. I've not test driven mine yet, as we had company, but I will tomorrow. Take a peek at this thread:

I was wondering how the pinning affects the handling also. By the way, I've been told everyone has a twin, but I never thought it applied to their possessions as well. I have a red cab and my name is Brian too!

Ed,

I believe this makes two world records in two consecutive years. My memory may be failing me but didn't you set a record of 993 owners in one place or something like that in 2012. Nice work keeping the 993 SoCal family intact!

Very cool!
Would be interested in your collective thoughts on the results.

Anyone in the LA area want to set up a similar party? I'll bring refreshments.

We wore out the drilling jig doing so many cars, it wasn't really built to handle a "production run" like that.
I am going to replace the steel part on the top and it will be available to borrow shortly. There are still enough pins for 5 more cars and two good drill bits (Thanks to Keith).
What better way to spend a Saturday with great people, great cars, pizza and beer.

It was so good, there was even free money! A passing jogger walked up the driveway with a $20 she found on the ground. Nick made a great joke about us being Porsche owners and that we just threw money around. It was pretty funny.

And yes, the pizza was awesome!

How do I get on the list for this new one? The other seems to be stalled in Boston until the end of winter...

too much fun. someone is going to outlaw your activities soon.
I would like to join the next party just to see the people, cars and activity. I went the $$$ route with RS HUBs, tie rods and new bearings.....

Well, I took mine for a drive through some beautiful rural roads nearby, and while I know this is all subjective, it felt pretty good. The thought had crossed my mind that it could work the other way, and some handling quirk would surface that I didn't like, like "darting" or something. But, certainly no ill effect, and it feels a bit more solid.

Then again, I swear I get 4 extra HP right after an oil change.

Ed,
Thanks again for allowing me to come over.
I can only imagine that drilling the holes with the car on stands would NOT have been fun. That extra 2ft of height provided by your lift was a huge advantage.

NOTE: I got a call from Guinness who told me that our application for World Record status was denied.
Apparently they have surveillance photo's of someone drinking a corona!

Nick, kinda bummed that I had to leave while your car was still on the lift. I'm jonesing to try out those delicious looking RSA seats you recently installed.

Craig
