Default Speaker upgrade FYI

I know stereo upgrades have been discussed at length so this might just be a fyi for newbies. I wanted to share so someone doesn't make the same mistake. i recently bought a set of Retrosound 4X6 (rear deck) and 5.25 Focal coaxials for the front stage. All from Crutchfield. The Retrosounds fit and sound just fine with bass blockers. Probably plenty for anybody. BTW i'm a recovering audiophile who lives by JL Audio products, but the specs on the retros leave room for adding a amp where most speakers this size do not. Anyways the Focal polyglass fit just perfectly in our door panels, but if you do not use subwoofers they leave you wanting just a little more bass. So, I hit RL searching for some answers. I only went with 5.25 because Crutchfield says that is what fits and 6.5 doesn't. So, I took a chance and ordered a set of 6.5 anyways and they fit almost perfectly to my surprise. I wasted a week. The only modifications I had to make was file out a small spot for the retainer tabs. See the pics below. Alot of words to say go with the 6.5 in speakers THEY FIT and sound great with no amp or subs. D

Thanks for the info! I'm looking to change my door speaker, too. Do post the model number for those Focals.
Did you make any change to the existing tweeter?

They are Focal Polyglass 165cvx. I think they are a great set. Especially since i don't have a amp. Adding a amplifier will only make them sound better. I left the OEM tweeters in place, but they are not in use. Later when I add a amp I will likely bridge them with the front Focal coaxials. But right now the Focals sound fine without them. The Focal tweeters can be aimed to the driver's ear, so it really fills the car with quality sound. The highs are really clear and the bass is great since I want to keep the floor space in the rear. I still take the kids out for rides. D

Thanks for the confirmation and motivation! Been meaning to add a set of 6.5 components to the 993 too! My DD has some I installed last year.
Any depth issues on the 6.5s?

Where are you located?

No depth issues. there is plenty of room inside the door cavity. I'm located just north of Baltimore.

yeah mine too. All of them left speaker dust in the doors. Really a shame how bad they were. But the tweeters are in great shape. I will hook them up to the head unit when I install the amp.

I made the same type of change as well, only using JL Audio. One thing I wanted to mention, make sure the screws go through the door card and securely into the steel panel behind. If only in the door card, they may feel secure, but bass will sound very muddy.

If you have a cab, has anyone replaced the 4" rear speakers? I've yet to find a good sounding 4" and have left them unplugged.
