Passed CA smog today what a releif
happy to say 95' 993 passed CA smog today, just barely. I was really worried it wouldn't pass.
15mph test: 1449 rmp, Max HC ppm 59, measured 59
25mph test: 2404 rmp, Max HC ppm 35, measured 35
Testing station said if I would have driven it this past week to "clear out the cats" it would have done better. He also said pick a warm day to do the test. Doing both of these should lower the numbers.

ya, engine was warmed up. temp past the 2nd line, not hot. I was debating to take the long way to the station through the canyon but just took the 4 or 5 mile surface street direct route. Canyon drive planned for after work.
oh, miles on the car 86,500.

My battery had died prior to my smog check recently. Had to do the BMW drive cycle. It took two tries but I got the readiness codes to reset and passed smog easily.

993s good and hot, should not have trouble passing the sniffer, my biggest concern is that the readiness codes won't be set. And at least you have some control over when you take the car in. My 993 was well below all the maximums at my last smog.

Barely warmed up-you need a good 20-30 minute romp to get it nice and saturated. My 71k '95 passed with flying colors. I drove for 45 minutes to the station, and made sure they put it on the sniffer right away.

Main thing is a hot Cat temp, not necessarily hot oil temp. Oil temp can go up in an idling car and the Cats will still be relatively cold.
I also do some hard throttle romps on the way to test - up hills best - and get it on the sniffer as quickly as possible. If there is a wait, drive the car and come back, don't let it sit even if idling.
I may try a wrap with header insulation on my Cats some time since my bet is that the more miles on a Cat, the more important high temp is.
