Can you be a bit more specific? What oil, and in what quantities? Are you just speculating or you've actually seen this have an effect?

My mechanic had something that he said would help. I don't recall which oil it was but it made a noticeable difference. Maybe it was Swepco? Conjecture. I don't actually recall. But it did help some.

Has anyone tried lining the transmission tunnel and undertray with Dynamat?

Unless there’s an actual mechanical issue, which is not a normal operating sound, the sound you call noise, isn’t. Maybe get something with more isolation, and/or a touring feel? Regarding fluid, I use Delvac, and it’s more “vocal” and needs more “encouragement” when cold. After it warms, it smooths out, and quiets down a tad.

I saw one of my old posts back in 2012 commenting on the LWF noise with 145K. Well I can report after a trans rebuild and the same flywheel, now with a GT3 PP and disk, it's much quieter. I can still here it at idle, but it not that noticeable. With a sample size of one, I can say wear and tear does make difference on how noisy a LWF can be.

An outstanding qualitative statement that is ideally suited for a discussion for Rennlist!

The gearbox makes no noise in cold temperatures while the transmission oil is cold an viscous. It’s quite pleasant, but I'm not sure it makes sense to use higher viscosity oil just to prevent the scraping metal sound. It can be avoided with gentler acceleration after shifting and with higher RPMs around town.

At idle in neutral, I’ve learned to hear the gearbox rattle in my ‘85 3.2 and in my 2018 991.2.

This is why Porsche deemed the LWF suitable for the RS Clubsport only and an option on the 993 RS lightweight. If you wanna go faster there is always a price to pay somewhere along the line.
Does anyone have a pic or a schematic of what is rattling? I know it's normal, and gotten used to it, but I've never REALLY understood why it makes a metal on metal noise.

It's just the unselected gears rattling on their shafts as 9M said
40lbs of flywheel makes the transmitted torque pulses smaller.
the gear rattle is transmitted to the cabin thru the tranny mount.
I don't think damping the trans tunnel would do much as you still have the rest of the F,R L & R floors vibrating
oil isn't really an option as it has to do a different job - lube your gears
rebuilding the trans with tighter tolerance and sticking with stock tranny mount is probably best you can do

P.S. You get the most unselected gears in neutral - it's just the input shaft driven
