Default Importing a US car from Canada??

I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with buying a car from Canada, that was originally a US car. In other words, a person in Canada, bought a car from the US and imported it there, and now it would be purchased and brought back to the US. Do you even need to report it to customs, or do you just have it shipped?

I've only imported a few US cars into Canada but I'm pretty sure you will have to go through US Customs.

Default TITLE

Ive done this twice.
Definetly need to stop at US Customs and pay Duty.
You need a US Broker to get a US TITLE, around $800.00

Default Cross Border Trading

Cross Border Trading can take care of everything. Their fee was reasonable, especially considering that if you use them it is a no headache process.

Considering the car was once a resident of USA, there shouldnt be any charges to get it back in the country?

Default Porsche duty, 2.5% back into US.

When you import a Non-North American made vehicle then there will be an additional charge of Duty which is 2.5% of the US value on the vehicle.

Has the speedo been converted from MPH to KPH? You may have to convert it back (or borrow one?)

this would normally be the standard, however considering the duty was already paid when it first landed in the USA, would it be charged again for a re-entry effectively being double charged?

Default Cross Border fee for paperwork

JonPaul, you're welcome made half a dozen phone calls to Calgary brokers/importers last summer and found this company to be the best informed. Back in July the fee they quoted was $450 plus a credit card processing fee. A lot better deal than having your pcar stranded coming across the border.

You don't need to convert it coming into Canada as KPH is already on the speedo albeit in small font.

Perhaps a broker could advise if there is a way around paying duty again.

I've often thought there must be customs brokers that handle this and that's not a bad price considering the hassle it could entail. You just have to remember the 2.5% duty on the car's value and budget for it ...

Yes in states that collect it. I would have to pay about 9% tax and 1% DMV fees on top of everything else ... so for example .. heh .. a $70K U.S. market TT bought in Canada and brought back into the U.S. to California would cost me an additional $1750 plus $450 in customs and broker fees plus $7000 in California state taxes and DMV fees .. assuming full disclosure

or import it into a state with lower taxes if that is possible (hey I was in Norcal this summer and heard about the out of state shopping for big ticket items)
