Curious about Speedline wheels

It is all about the side wall and the resulting ride. The stock tire size on the 17" wheels:
205/55/17 front
255/40/17 rear
Note the % profile of the front and rear tires, 55% and 40%, that is, the height of the side wall in percent, in relation to the width of the tire in mm.
When you get to 18", as an example on the 993 Turbo, with 225/40 fronts and 285/30 rears, the fronts being 40% and the rears 30%, those are pretty low profile tires. The lower the profile, the rougher the ride. In addition, if you were to hit a pothole at 65 mph on low profile tires, ouch, that hurt! On 17" wheels, it will hurt too, but not so much. On the higher profile tires the probability
of bending a wheel are reduced as well.
Now when it comes to esthetics, I will concede that the 18" low profile set up looks mean and manly. I would love to have a set of Speedlines for Porsche on my 993, if it were a street car...but it is 95% track, and for that, I am going the OZ 18" route, cheap and light, two things the Speedline wheels are not.

Great info, thank you. On a totally different subject I also wonder why everybody changes from the stock suspension to lower the car (obviously I am a newbie to all of this)? As a street car I assume the lower suspension will not ride as smooth as stock. Is this just another aesthetic thing or is there a performance/handling benefit to lowering a street car?

Speedline for Porsche 993 as fitted oe only came in 18" sizes
there were 3 different designs
RS & RS/CS 8x18ET52, 10x18ET65, 'Speedline for Porsche" etched on the rim, aluminum

Cup used a magnesium center lock version, 8.5x18 ET53, 10x18 ET60
Gt2 used an aluminum 5 bolt version w/ darker ctr. paint 9x18 ET34, 11x18 ET18
There was a 1 piece wheel that looked similar, I don't know who made it, 7x16ET55, 9x16 ET70
Speedline made lots of different wheels for lots of different cars
their generic 18, sizes from 8 to 12, I think it was called the Corse(Sp?)
for 911/930 thru '89 Speedline for Ruf in sizes from 7.5 to 10 x17
also 17 & 18" Speedline for Ruf for 964/993

I still don't understand why Porsche would put such heavy wheels on the RS car. Now I would love a set of magnesium center sections

For a street car, das macht nichts, but notice that for the dedicated track cars, Cup, RSR, GT2evo they uused either mg or light BBS wheels

My understanding from reading somewhere years ago is that there are actually two different "Speedline" wheel manufacturers (Can anyone confirm? One I think is called Speedline Corse but not sure of the other), and at least one of which manufacturers under their own brand. In addition, Speedline makes wheels for a number of manufacturers as well as some of the older OEM Porsche wheels. For example, the Gemballa Competition wheel is labeled "Speedline Corse" if I recall correctly.
IMHO the Supercup II would have been the best looking "RS Cup" type wheels if you were looking for a more modern look...18" with reverse lip

Are the bolts missing or is that the way it looks? Can we petition to get these made? I would sell my RUF's in a heartbeat for a set of these!

That was a prototype Kinesis put together to whet our appetite. Cruel if you ask me. These are so much better looking than the 18" Supercups with the 17" rim centers.
