Default after-run cooling fan - how long is it supposed to run when it runs?

Nothing's more gratifying to me than when one of my cars' after-run cooling fans pumps on - signifies to me that... well... I've done good 8-).

Question on the 993 tho... how long is it supposed to RUN once it comes on?

I've searched / read, seems all I find are those questioning if that's 'normal' for it to be coming on (duh).

Reason I ask... mine comes on... for like all of maybe 2-3secs... maybe once, maybe twice, maybe thrice.

Shouldn't it run longer before shutting off? In my former //S6 (i5t) it'd run for seemingly 30-60sec's.

Querious.

I just happen to have the Owner's Manual in front of me. On page 41, under Engine compartment blower fan, it states:

"Rear fan temperature monitoring: If the ignition has been switched on for at least 30 seconds, the engine compartment temperatur willl be monitored for at least 20 minutes after the ignition is switched off. If the engine compartment temperature exceeds 167degF/75degC during this period, the rear fan will switch on. When the temperature drops below 158degF/70degC, it will switch off. Temperature will then be monitored for another 15 minutes. If the temperature limit is not exceeded during this additiional period, the control unit will switch off."

I have noticed that after a spirited run, especially during hot weather, the fan will run for a period after I shut the engine off. I don't think I ever remember it turning on for only 2 to 3 seconds though. Sounds like a monitoring issue. Sometimes when I know the engine is quite hot, I'll leave the rear spoiler in the up position to help dissipate the heat from the engine (not sure if this really helps).

Good luck!

As Gary said, it should run intermittently for up to 20 minutes. I have actually timed it once to check and it stops after 20 minutes. The fan never runs for longer than 5-10 seconds at a time. More like 5 in my experience.

It's all normal!

After a run in the heat - I put a box fan at the rear and let it run until I remember to go shut it off.

thanks for the replies guys, appreciate it

good to hear it's normal - tho I still think it should stay on longer 8-)... not sure how quick little bursts like that can be effective but hey what do I know...

The quick bursts don't cool the engine - they are simply to check the engine temp.

If you unplug the wire going to the sensor in the duct it will run for 20 minutes and then shut off. I leave it unplugged in hot weather.
