NOT Fabspeed Air Intake
I searched for prior posts and see the 964 Forum has opinions about the airbox. Since I could find nothing in the 993 forum, I thought this may be of interest.
I purchased with the BMC filter and like the look and fit. Also, I see now how one could modify their own stock airbox in the same way. The Fabspeed is a bit flimsy compared to the more rigid material used in the stock cover. And one could make an argument that $175 for the plastic bit is a bit much!

Stock Lid
I agree that makes sense. My stock lid has been chopped up with openings in different locations. I will take a picture and post. I might clean it up to be more open like the Fabspeed. Also I can't disagree with all the negativity here, just thought I would post.
I have this filter in my stock box on the 2001 Carrera and have never oiled it. I do not intend to oil this one. That being said, do you think the paper filter keeps more dirt out? Perhaps so.

CF
It looks like the CF is actually a decal! I think it is just plastic and very weak at that. $175 call me stupid. What can I say!

Regarding oiled cotton air filters,.....if these are installed dry; i.e. no oil, they are no better at filtering than a nylon stocking and that is NOT good for your engine. These are meant to be oiled as that's the filtering medium; the cotton simply offers a place for the oil. As most know by now, Mass Airflow Sensors are quite sensitive to any contaminants, including filter oil so thats why people in the service & repair industry recommend using OEM paper filters. This saves our clients a bunch of money since MAFS's run over $580 and we've seen no performance gains on 911's using K&N or BMC filters.
Performance wise, we've seen gains of 2-3 BHP on the engine dyno with an open, cut-away aircleaner cover, however you'll never feel that in your backside. Everything else was a waste of time and in fact, the popular cone filters actually lost power due to MAFS turbulence.

Come on; I agree that the Fabspeed air filter cover is stupid, but it's less stupid than exhaust lights, under carriage neon, dancing pick up truck beds, muffler turbo whistles, plywood air dams and spoilers...the list goes on.
Here; try this as a random Google sample for "most stupid car mods": http://www.manolith.com/2009/08/31/1...lous-car-mods/

based on what factual technical evidence? id venture to say its sucking in more hot air though... plus if you put a paper filter in there, you stand a chance of it collapsing into the intake.
