Winter or All Season Tires
Can anybody recommend a good winter or all season tire for a 993 c2 with 17" rims? I plan to drive year round but only when the roads are clear. I was leaning towards the Continental Extreme DWS until I read a very bad review of them on this forum. Now I am having second thoughts about them. Anybody purchase a set recently and have any feedback good or bad? What others should I consider and yes I have already done a search but am looking for the most current information available. Thanks.

My car was shod with Michelins PS2 All season. When the rears came due, I went t he cheaper Continentals. The Michelins were definitely better and would go Michelin if I were to do it again.
The Continentals have a softer sidewall and the rear end feels loose..

All season if you are driving when roads are clear... I have Kumho 4X, but have not been in cold weather or snow with them... don't plan on snow as I have a Toyota 4x4 for that stuff...

Some of my friends in Europe, i.e. Germany run their Wintersport tires from November to April and switch to performance tires for spring/summer and early fall....
Wintersport tires have come a long way the last 5 years or so....I have run Dunlops and Pirelli....with great results....
If you are just driving around town, it works well, even with some spirited driving, non-track....they can handle high speeds 100 mph plus...when cruising
I have done this the last 2 winter seasons with success and elongated the life of my more expensive summer performance tires.......

Run Nokian WRG2's all year round on our 993 and MINI S. An expensive tire, ($250 per) but very quiet and compliant; excellent if you happen to drive on snow and ice.
They wear well if driven conservatively, should get maybe 25k miles on a set.

I've had the Conti DWS on my 2005 330i since the tire came out. I wrote some reviews here on the forum - try a search on RonCT and DWS and they may show up. Perhaps the most impressive tire I've ever purchased, which is saying a lot.

Have Conti DWS on my DD (08 Accord Coupe) and found them to be quiet, handle well, and acceptable on snow and ice here in the Philadelphia area. The one negative is that with ~30K miles and about 50% tread, they're getting harder to balance and starting to exhibit vibration at higher speeds. All considered, I'll definitely buy them again.
For the 993, since I don't track the car but do drive it hard on the street and wanted to use the car when the temps drop below 40, my mechanic thought the DWS would be a good choice. He's been recommending them to other Porsche owners and the reports have been positive. I like the idea that if I sacrifice a little handling over a summer tire, I can get a tire that keeps the car on the road during the winter. Haven't changed out my Sumis yet, but seriously contemplating the DWS.

Porsche AG conducted extensive "winter" tire testing back in the days of the 993 (911). The winter tire specific to the 17" wheel size was the Dunlop SP M2 Mud & Snow tire. My experience with the Dunlop SP M2 fitted to OEM 17 Cup II wheels was very favorable, although limited to colder 45*F Fall temperature drives, never saw snow. The Michelin model Arctic-something or other model was recommended for 18" wheel fitments.
Our Audi MY95.5 UrS6 Avant, a quattro RS2 turbo hot rod sleeper wagon traveled on both the Michelin Arctic & Dunlop SP M2 winter tires; size 225/50/16 on OEM Avus wheels. While both brand/model are tier-one HP performers in all aspects, the Michelins were a notable work horse in the snow, and very good in the dry traction/braking departments. That UrS6 kombi made the 100mi Denver to Vail trek in all kinds of weather. Cold and even colder temps over dry pavement, turns to 2 feet of snow, turns to ice over packed snow, turns to ice over slush and snow. A real mess Hwy I-70 can be plus all the J/O in all-season tire fitted rental cars. Deadicated winter sneakers is the only way to roll.... and in Germany winter tires are a TUV law.

I bought a set of Michelin Alpin snows and 17" wheels for my Audi TT last year. They ride quieter and smoother than the Summer Pirelli's that came with the car! Yes, the Pirelli tires are 18's so the ride should be a little more firm. Can't wait to wear out the Pirelli's!

When my Michelin Pilot Alpins wore out after 9 seasons, the 245/40 x 17 rears were NLA. I replaced them two years ago with V rated Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D. I've had no issues. They go in snow although the front end of my car has always felt a bit light in slick winter conditions. I'd only suggest all season tires if you don't plan to drive in snow.
