brakes - agreed one of the most impressive part of any Porsche... basically should feel like they can be modulated w/ a grain of sand stuck within the sole of your shoe... they're that good

maybe the one you tried had some hotter pads in it that req'd warmup before working right - but the pedal sounds normal

heavy clutch is likely a worn pressure plate, the springs get weak

I'll say tho that they dual-mass clutch in these is the suck for feel (IMNSHO)... I abhoar dual mass clutches in any car tho, they just suck. I'm still getting used to mine, and I'll never like it even when I get used to it.

I put 50k on my e28 ///M5 over 4yrs... the clutch on 993's is nothhhhhhhhhing like it.

Yes, the floor-pivot pedals do take some getting used to - same as my Westybus tho so I had good practice 8-)

Totally agree on your rational / reasons for wanting one - you sound like one will be a good fit for you

Heck, I nearly enjoy mine more than my former 930... 'nuff said 8-). Fantabular driving cars!

I just noticed you're in Boston. I'm in Medway MA about 25 miles west of Boston. Good to know there's some local Rennlisters!

funny I've got a bud in Medway - not a car dude tho 8-/

I'm 26mi down 84W from the Pike toll (UCONN exit, 2mi off ramp - the stretch of highway in my avatar heh heh) if you're ever thru this way... e39 ///M5 owner's enough cred for wheel-time in my book 8-)

Rob, there will be a Porsche NER autocross next weekend in Ayer - you might want to stop by have a look.

If you want to drive mine at some point you're welcome to.

No, steering wheel is not adjustable. yes, brake pedal travel is short. Brakes being the greatest feature of a 993 in my opinion. Clutch can be blead and slave replaced to make the feel softer. But i refer you once again to an E28 M5 and that clutch was truly a bear.

So the question you should ask yourself is "Why 993". And unless you can answer it honestly it'll be hard to live with one.

Nicely said.

There are good reasons to own an older Porsche, but the buyer may ultimately be disappointed in the dynamics/performance of a previous generation car. New advances in braking, handling, etc. can make newer cars more satisfying/fun to drive.

I enjoyed certain aspects of owning my '76 912E, for example, but the driving experience was negatively impacted by its substandard performance (only 86hp), which was somewhat disappointing. Be sure you go into the purchase of such "legacy cars" with you eyes wide open.

Having owned my first 993 for a few weeks with help from you 993 people, I totally agree. Hard to believe my track 996 is only 4 years newer than my 993. Getting ready to head to VIR for the ALMS race today for a fun drive on new Sumitomos. No cruise control just driving. Love this car.

Biggest thing I noticed after my 993 purchase is how tight it feels for a 95. It's very raw or "direct" in it's carrying out all my inputs. Hard to describe until you drive one. Love the feel and not sure It can replicated in another vehicle. I'm hooked!

I'm seriously curious how many of you guys have driven a Miata in anger (yes, I did beat 2 GT3-RSs today but none of these are street cars).

No way?

I'm @ the Electric Blu... er, I um uh mean the UCONN exit .

Be cool to meet a local owner... I've got a *real* great circle of local enthusinuts of various breeds that is always good to expand 8-).

PM me sometime, or viceversa...

Ruby Rd. stretch... heh... played right (cough no JohnnyL cough), has seen many a buried gauge lol... Just Not Right.

Tho, coupla years ago the stretch more near me was in the news for being voted as 'fastest in the country' (muwahahaha) - go figure. I know nuthing... nuthhhhhhhhhing 8-).

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the offer! Too bad I'm away next weekend, the autoX sounds like fun.

I have two 993's and the clutch and brake pedals are different in both. The "S" clutch pedal is stiff and I relate this to the lightweight flywheel (I have heard others with the LFW say the same thing), while my NB has the dual-mass flywheel and the clutch takes medium to light pressure. I put big reds on the "S" and the brake pedal is very firm right at the top, where as the NB has stock brakes and is not as firm and has more "travel." Like others have suggested drive as many examples as possible and note any mods that may be affecting feel of the car.
