Default 993 oil leak need to re-torque head studs?

Hi There

I have cross posted this on the Pelican engine rebuilding form.

I did a top end rebuild on my 993. The engine was oil tight at first, but after a very few miles is now weeping oil heavily from the cylinder bases. I was very careful torquing the heads, but is it likely/possible that they need torquing again? I did not replace the studs. Also can the heads be re-torqued with the engine in the car?

I used a Wrightwood racing gasket set and a smear of hylomar blue.

Thanks in advance for any opinions.

Hi Andy

Thank you for the link. I had read that post a while back but missed the conclusion. I did not split my case but may have damaged the cylinder "O" rings.

All the best

Hi Berni,

Which cylinder base(s) is it leaking from? How many miles since the rebuild? Any pictures of the leaking area?

Mine was leaking from a distinct location, cylinder 2. I still don't know what the culprit was as there was nothing obviously wrong when I took it apart. I removed the 4 through bolts that surround cylinder two since they all looked a little oily, put in all new o rings, used dow corning 11 on the through bolt o rings, curil T on the cylinder base o rings, and threebond 1120 on the cylinder bases. I then retightened to spec, making EXTRA sure I was torquing the head studs correctly. I've got 1,100 miles now and the leak hasn't returned, knock on wood.

Good luck, I hope you get this sorted out soon.

Same thing happenned on my 993 top end rebuild many years ago. Did not leak at first, but after 200 miles, it leak at cylinder base. Everyday, the leak got bigger when I parked.

I had to tear the engine down, replace the cylinder base gaskets and thru-bolt orings. That fixed it, but nothing looked wrong when I took the orings out.
